Derek Adams highlights importance of Accrington trip in Plymouth’s survival bid

Plymouth Argyle are still fully embroiled in the League One relegation battle, following a somewhat dismal Easter Weekend for Derek Adams.

The Pilgrims had looked safe at one point, but a calamitous run has seen them plunged back into the mire. They’ve won just one in ten and lost to Barnsley yesterday, fresh on the back of a 3-1 defeat against Gillingham.

The Gills were rivals in the fight against the drop, but attention now turns to two other clubs involved in the fight, both opponents of the Pilgrims.

Firstly, they travel to Accrington Stanley, before what looks like a winner-takes-all crunch match with Scunthorpe United on the final day.

“We have got to look at the Accrington game now and have got to win that,” Derek Adams told the club’s official site.

“That will allow us to go into the last game of the season [knowing what we have to do]. We all know that the teams round about us have got difficult fixtures as well but, if we win our remaining games, we will have done our job.”

Meanwhile, he also looked to clarify the position of leading scorer Freddie Ladapo, who allegedly ruled himself out of the fixture yesterday.

“He came into the physio room [Sunday] and said that he couldn’t train or play, he has a calf and a groin injury, so ruled himself out,“ said Derek.

“We’ll have to wait and see, but he did say he couldn’t train or play [against Barnsley]. It is too early to say if he will be fit for next week, I have no idea.”

That was a stance the player did not agree with, tweeting to that effect after the encounter.

Our View

I feel there’s big trouble on the horizon at Plymouth and only the poor form of others could stop them going down.

They’re yet to tie their big players to new deals and the issue around Ladapo would be laughable if it wasn’t so serious. The player clearly didn’t rule himself out, so could he be set to join Lameiras and Carey on their way out of Home Park?

or, will the manager go first?
