Reports from the BBC suggest that League Two strugglers Macclesfield have not paid their players for January as yet.
The Silkmen are second from bottom in the basement division and in real danger of falling out of the Football league having only been promoted last season. They lost manager John Askey in the summer, then sacked replacement Mark Yates earlier this season.
Former Arsenal and Spurs defender Sol Campbell is now in charge, but it seems their troubles are ongoing. Some players are thought to have contacted the PFA for help in the matter.
The incident comes almost exactly a year after the club failed to pay staff the last time. It was the same month, January wages, with the eventual issue in 2018 being reported as a ‘technical glitch’ at the bank.
As yet, there’s no clarity as to why the situation has arisen again, but it will be hugely concerning to all at Moss Rose after a recent improvement in performances, if not results.
Our View
This could be very, very troubling for the Silkmen. They’re in a perilous position at the foot of the table and if players are not paid, their motivation will surely be damaged too.
Sol Campbell was desperate for a job in football, but you have to wonder if this was the right job. They did superbly to be promoted last season, but there’s such a small catchment area for supporters and income is suffocated. They’re on a hiding to nothing and could face further issues if they go down once more.
