Sordell suffers injury setback at Northampton

Northampton Town will be without deadline day loan signing Marvin Sordell for their trip to League Two leaders Lincoln City on Saturday.

Sordell started ten of parent club Burton Albion’s first eleven League One games this campaign, scoring twice, before twisting his knee in the FA Cup loss to Scunthorpe in November. He didn’t feature again for the Brewers before heading out on loan to the Cobblers.

He made his debut in Northampton’s 4-0 defeat to Colchester but did not feature in their impressive 2-1 defeat of Tranmere at Prenton Park in midweek.

Speaking to the Northampton Chronicle and Echo, Cobblers boss Kieth Curle confirmed Sordell would not be available for selection for the game at Sincil Bank after sustaining a knee injury, but insisted it was not a  severe injury and defended his decision to sign a player who was not one hundred per cent fit. He said, “Potentially, Marvin could play and perform but it wouldn’t be the level that I need him at, and certainly not the level that he wants to perform at.”

“So I have taken the view that I would rather spend two or three weeks getting him where I need him to be and then get him out there.”
“You get the opportunity to get a player of Marvin’s quality, knowing that he had a little bit of time off with an injury,”
“It was a calculated gamble because we had enough information, we knew what it (the injury) was, and then when the player says ‘I can give you more, but I might need to take two weeks out to get it right’, I am prepared to do that.”
Curle will also be missing midfielder Sam Foley and defender George Cox but Jay Williams fit and available again after missing the Tranmere match.

Our View

Its always a gamble signing a player who is recovering from an injury, but taking a punt on these deals is often a fact of life for managers at the bottom end of the EFL.

Proof that such gambles can be successful will be on the pitch on Saturday. Neal Eardley has been a near ever-present for Lincoln in the last season and a half after nearly two years out with injury problems.

Curle will be hoping Sordell will prove him right recover his fitness and get the goals to secure a mid-table finish in a disappointing season for the Cobblers. The omens don’t look good at the moment.
