18-year old Southend United defender Taylor Curran has joined Swindon Town on a two and a half year deal today, as reported by their official website.
He hadn’t made a senior appearance for the Shrimpers, but gained valuable first team experience whilst out on loan at Braintree in the National League. He only signed his first professional two-year deal in March 2018, but hasn’t been able to force himself into Chris Powell’s side.
He’s delighted to be making a move, claiming to be ‘over the moon’ to be joining Richie Wellens’ side.
“I’m looking forward to it – I got told on Friday that it was happening and it’s just been about getting it done since then,” Curran said.
“I’m still 18 so it’s pretty unbelievable and I’m over the moon.”
Swindon are currently 11th in the League Two table, 16 points away from Colchester United in the final play-off spot. Curiously, Southend are also in 11th placed in League One, but only trail sixth-placed Peterborough by nine points.
Our View
There’s not a lot to be gleaned from this right now. Curran is a prospect, but not one deemed good enough to break through at Roots Hall.
They’ve seen some talented young boys emerge this season, Dru Yearwood has been outstanding and Charlie Kelman has recently exploded onto the scene as well.
Curran now has a chance to make a name for himself away from the pressure those tow players have heaped on the youth team.
