Jack Whatmough extends his stay at Fratton Park

Jack Whatmough has signed a new contract with Portsmouth which will extend his stay on the south coast until the summer of 2021.

The recent form of the central defender has been a significant factor in Pompey’s march to the top of League One, and news of the contract extension will put to an end rumours linking him with a move away from Fratton Park.

With his contract due to expire in the summer, reports suggested that both Celtic and Rangers were keen on securing the services of the talented twenty-two-year-old.

Whatmore joined the Portsmouth academy at the age of twelve and made his first-team debut in November 2013. He has since made over ninety appearances, scoring one goal which came at Carlisle United during Portsmouth’s dramatic League Two Championship winning season of 2016/2017.

Speaking about his decision on the official club website Whatmough immediately turned his thoughts to promotion “I’m delighted to be here for another two-and-a-half years. This is a good squad to be a part of, and I’m looking forward to the future.”

“You only get rewarded with a contract if you’re doing your job, so now I want to stay in the team and keep performing well.”

“I want to be playing as high as I possibly can – and hopefully that will be in the Championship next season.”

Whatmough is the second player to commit his future to Portsmouth this week after goalkeeper Craig MacGillivray also penned an extension to 2021.

Our View

This news is fantastic for Portsmouth supporters. Whatmough has formed a formidable central defensive partnership with Matt Clarke, and it is a real boost to their promotion hopes that he has decided to stay with Pompey. Indeed some supporters might be thinking they have not signed him for long enough given his undeniable talent.
