Reports suggest that Sunderland manager Jack Ross is keen on taking Celtic’s Scottish international defender Jack Hendry on loan.
23-year-old Hendry was signed from Dundee a year ago for £1.5 million. He has made 25 appearances for Celtic but has fallen out of favour at Parkhead and not featured since the 3-1 Europa League defeat to Red Bull Salzburg on October 4.
Ross is hoping his close relationship with Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers will enable him to fend off competition from League One rivals Portsmouth and Bradford City for the young defender’s signature. Speaking after Sunderland’s 1-0 defeat of Blackpool at Bloomfield Road, Ross was confident of getting in some defensive cover for his stretched squad, saying that “I’m hopeful we’ll manage to get a defensive player in. All being well, I’d hope that will be concluded post the Charlton game.”
Hendry made his debut for Scotland in their 1-0 victory over Hungary in March and travelled with the national team on the end-of-season to Mexico and Peru. The young Scot came through the ranks at Partick Thistle before joined Wigan Athletic in 2015 where he enjoyed loan spells at MK Dons and Shrewsbury before moving back north to Dundee. His strong performances at Dens Park made him a fan’s favourite and caught the eye of Rodgers, who took him to Parkhead in January 2018.
Our View
Hendry could be just the ticket for Ross as he strives to get Sunderland promoted back to the Championship at the first attempt. The Lads are having a great season but encountering stiff competition from Portsmouth and surprise package Luton for those coveted automatic promotion places. Having just got coveted midfielder American midfielder, Lynden Gooch, to extend his contract, a further flexing of their financial muscle is needed in January to strengthen their hand for the final push.
