Ryan Lowe was no a happy man after his Bury side found themselves 2-0 down after ten minutes against rivals Oldham.
By half time the Shakers were 3-0 down, with the game ending up 4-2 to the Latics. The result leaves Bury in fourth, still firmly camped in the play off places, but Lowe was still not happy. He apologised to the supporters who made the journey, only to be giving a festive hammering by Frankie Bunn’s side.
“I really don’t know where that first-half performance came from if I’m honest,” he told the Bury Times. “We just weren’t at it and of course we’re all angry and disappointed. I want to apologise to the fans. They travelled here in their numbers and that just wasn’t good enough from us.”
Lowe went on to admit he couldn’t understand what happened, not after the Shakers have been in such superb form.
“I just can’t understand it. Training all week has been brilliant, the lads had all been bubbly and everyone was looking forward to it. We were up for it, but that first 10 minutes just wasn’t us.”
Lowe concluded by looking at the bigger picture, trying to put the game behind him as quickly as possible.
“We’re fourth in the table after 22 games. I think if someone had given me that at the start of the season I’d have snatched their hand off.”
Bury now have two huge clashes against play off rivals coming up, firstly hosting Tranmere Rovers who are eighth, before a Boxing Day trip to Mansfield Town, currently one point behind them in fifth but with two games in hand.
Where did that result come from? Lowe’s Bury have been superb and bar their FA Cup defeat against high-flying League One side Luton, they haven’t lost since October.
Maybe the pressure of the derby got to them, maybe their recent good form has ben building up to this, but with two huge games over the next ten days, they’ll want to be back on point quickly.
