Stevenage midfielder completes National League switch

Stevenage midfielder Jonathan Smith has completed a move to National League strugglers Chesterfield after a successful loan spell.

The 32-year old, who has filled in at right back in recent weeks, made his loan move permanent after falling out of favour with Dino Maamria’s side.

Smith, who has also played for Luton Town and York City amongst others, now joins Martin Allen’s strugglers as they look to find a way up the National League towards a Football League return.

6ft 3in Smith was delighted at the move, claiming he enjoyed his loan spell and wanted any confusion over the FA Cup cleared up sooner rather than later.

“I was really enjoying it,” he said of his loan deal. “So if there was a chance it could be made permanent I would definitely have been interested.”

“Making it permanent cuts out all the talk about the possibility of me being recalled, or am I allowed to play in the FA Cup.“It just clears it all up, so there’s no chance of being recalled and upsetting the apple cart.”

Smith player for Luton when they were promoted from this level and had successful seasons with them in League Two.

He’ll add experience to the side, but with Stevenage fighting at the top of the table it seems his chances at Broadhall Way had become too limited.
