The jewel in Southend’s crown, midfielder Dru Yearwood, is set to become a target for Crystal Palace according to Team Talk.
Yearwood has quickly risen through the ranks at Roots Hall after making his professional debut back at the age of 17.
Still only 18-years old Yearwood is highly rated at Southend and is likely to attract a wealth of interest in January, beginning with the Premier League side.
He joined Southend at the age of 11 but signed a four-year deal in 2017 after impressing on his rise to the starting XI. This season he’s been in superb form, making nine appearances and taking his total league starts to 31.
At the time of signing his new deal, Phil Brown was in charge of the Shrimpers and he was enthusiastic for Yearwood’s future.
“There’s a long way to go. He’s a young man with immense talent,” he told the club’s official site. “A 17-year-old, he’s got the world at his feet and I just hope we can help him realise that dream. Realising that potential takes a lot of help, a lot of luck and support. I’ve met Dru’s family and the support mechanism that he’s got, I don’t think he can fail.”
Southend are currently 12th in League One, just five points outside the top six.
Our View
Yearwood is getting better with every game and he’s surely one that Chris Powell will want to hold on to.
There might be a deal whereby he is loaned back to the club as they hunt Championship football, but if they hold their nerve he could be worth much more in a year or two.
