Coventry City finally bagged their man last week, snaring Conor Chaplin from Portsmouth after a pursuit that lasted the whole summer.
When it finally happened, the fee was undisclosed, but the Sky Blues are thought to have paid up to £300,000 for the 21-year old’s services. In the light of Marc McNulty’s departure and Maxime Biamou’s injury, it seems a fair fee.
This weekend Mark Robin’s team found themselves beaten 1-0 at home against Rochdale, although Chaplin wasn’t on the score sheet. Having only joined late in the week, he made a cameo from the bench,
Chaplin is already revered at the Ricoh, with League One rivals Barnsley and Bristol Rovers, as well as Tony Mowbray’s Championship Blackburn Rovers are all thought to have coveted his signature. However, his statement to press ensured his new fans warmed quickly to him.
“There were options,” he said. “But I made my mind up at the start of the window that this was where I wanted to come and I was never swayed by that.”
He arrived in the 56th minute of the defeat against Dale, but if the response from twitter is anything to go by, his first start isn’t far away. Even a few Pompey fans joined the Conor Chaplin love-in.
