Ipswich Town will look to move into the Championship play-off positions when they welcome runaway leaders Coventry City to Portman Road on Saturday.
Our Three Predictions For Ipswich Town vs Coventry City
- First Prediction:Â Ipswich Town – Draw No Bet – 13/20
- Second Prediction:Â Both Teams To Score – 8/13
- Third Prediction:Â Over 2.5 Goals – 8/11
First Prediction For Ipswich Town vs Coventry City – Ipswich Town – Draw No Bet – 13/20
There’s no getting away from the fact that Ipswich have been largely inconsistent since dropping back down to the Championship. They’ve largely been on the fringes of the play-off places over the last few weeks though but have twice missed out on a opportunity to move into the top 6.
The Tractor Boys could have temporarily moved up to second a week ago when they travelled to struggling Oxford United, but suffered a shock 2-1 defeat. They followed that on Tuesday night with the rearranged trip to Blackburn Rovers, where a win would have seen them move up to fifth. However, it took a 95th minute strike from Sindre Walle Egeli to secure a 1-1 draw.
Despite that, Kieran McKenna’s side have been tough to beat at Portman Road. They’ve lost just once at home whilst also picking up wins over the likes of Sheffield United, Norwich City and West Bromwich Albion.
There’s not much that can be said about Coventry that hasn’t already been said. They’ve been by far the best team in the division and currently lead the table by a staggering 10 points.
After suffering their only defeat of the season at Wrexham at the end of October, the Sky Blues head into this on the back of 5 successive wins. However, they’ve rode their luck at times and this will be one of the toughest fixtures they have faced so far this season.
A win for the home side would change the promotion picture, but backing Ipswich with a draw no bet option would see your stake returned if the scores end level.
Second Prediction For Ipswich Town vs Coventry City – Both Teams To Score – 8/13
Ipswich rank high in this market, with 67% of their fixtures seeing both teams score. They have scored and conceded in 6 of their last 10 fixtures, keeping 3 clean sheets in the process.
The Tractor Boys will be confident they can find the net at least once though. They are the joint-second highest goalscorers in the division alongside Hull City, with 30 goals to their name. Keeping a clean sheet will be a tough ask though.
Coventry’s form in front of goal has been well documented, having scored an unbelieveable 50 goals in 18 games. Only Leicester City and Hull have stopped them scoring, although both of those fixtures came in the early stages of the campaign.
Frank Lampard’s team keep winning, but shut outs are at a premium. In their past 8 games, Stoke City are the only team not to breach the Sky Blues’ back line.
Third Prediction For Ipswich Town vs Coventry City – Over 2.5 Goals – 8/11
Ipswich are middle of the road when it comes to this market, with half of their outings generating 3 or more goals. This does rise slightly to 56% at Portman Road, which is high considering their last 3 at home have all been low scoring affairs.
Unsurprisingly, Coventry rank amongst the division’s highest here, with 72% of their games going over this marker. That is a figure only matched by Hull, with the 2 sides also seeing that percentage rise to 78% on the road.
Looking back at their past 8 games, the 1-0 victory over Stoke is the only fixture which has produced minimal goals. Their last 3 outings have generated a combined 15 goals.

Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head-To-Head:
Ipswich harbour ambitions of returning to the Premier League at the first time of asking. Despite suffering relegation, they impressed in their solitary season in the top tier, having risen there following back-to-back promotions from League One.
Their Championship campaign has underwhelmed thus far and Kieran McKenna’s side have failed to hit any kind of consistency. Questions were starting to be asked following a 3-0 home defeat to Charlton Athletic in October, which saw them move into the bottom half of the table.
A 6-game unbeaten run followed, meaning a win over Oxford United at the end of last month would have seen them move up to second in the table. However, they suffered a shock 2-1 loss at the Kassam Stadium.
Another chance to jump into the play-off positions appeared on Tuesday night when they travelled to Blackburn Rovers for September’s rearranged fixture. It proved to be another missed opportunity though, with Sindre Walle Egeli’s 95th minute strike earning a 1-1 draw.
Meanwhile, Coventry look to be steamrolling their way to the Championship title and currently sit 10 points clear at the top of the table. They’ve won 11 of their last 12 games, although suffered their only loss of the season with a 3-2 defeat at Wrexham at the end of October.
The Sky Blues head into this game on the back of 5 successive wins, having beaten Sheffield United (3-1), Stoke City (1-0), West Bromwich Albion (3-2), Middlesbrough (4-2) and Charlton Athletic (3-1).
Ipswich have been by far the dominant force in this fixture over the years, including recently. They met in FA Cup fourth round last season, with the Tractor Boys picking up a comfortable 4-1 win at the CBS Arena.
Coventry last picked up a win against the Suffolk-based side in 2020, when both teams were in League One. Overall, there has been 91 prior clashes between the two, with Ipswich winning 41 and the Sky Blues 25. They have also played out 25 draws, the last of which came in 2019.
