Hull have been one of the surprises of the first third of the Championship season. Heavily tipped to suffer relegation in the summer, they find themselves on the fringes of the play-off places in seventh.

Their home form in particular has been strong, although they did lose their last outing at the MKM Stadium when Ipswich Town left East Yorkshire with a 2-0 win. However, that was their first home defeat since losing to Blackburn Rovers in August.

The Tigers recovered from back-to-back defeats at the weekend when they secured a 2-1 victory at fellow promotion challengers Stoke City.

Middlesbrough found themselves in disarray recently when head coach Rob Edwards opted to leave the Riverside Stadium after just four-and-a-half months to take on the vacant position at Wolverhampton Wanderers. They appointed the highly rated Swedish coach Kim Hellberg last week and he picked up 3 points in his first game at the weekend with a late comeback against Derby County.

The Teessiders enter this game in poor form away from home though. They have drawn 2 and lost 1 of their last 3 on their travels, and they may struggle to end that run here.

On paper, this prediction is an easy one to make. Only Southampton have been involved in more games where both teams have scored than Hull, with 72% of their fixtures achieving this feat.

Although this percentage falls slightly to 67% at the MKM Stadium, this was brought down by their recent 2-0 loss against Ipswich. Prior to that, they scored and conceded in 5 of their last 6 home outings.

Middlesbrough do rank lower in this market, although are still at a high 61%. It’s worth noting that this has risen in recent weeks though, with their last 5 hitting this marker.

Third Prediction For Hull City vs Middlesbrough – Joe Gelhardt To Score Anytime – 29/10

Joe Gelhardt spent the second half of last season on loan at Hull from Leeds United, scoring 5 times. The Tigers were keen to bring him back for a second spell and eventually secured his signature on a season-long deal in August.

The 23-year-old has been in electric form as of late. He has 9 Championship goals to his name and has scored in 7 of the last 9 league outings.

It was no surprise to see the attacker grab a 90th minute winner at Stoke on Saturday and he is worth backing to grab his 10th of the campaign here.

Hull are undoubtedly the surprise package of the Championship this season and find themselves in an unlikely race for promotion. Obviously, it is early days still and they only avoided relegation to League One by the skin of their teeth in May, but their pursuit so far shows no signs of slowing.

Admittedly, form has dipped somewhat in recent weeks. The Tigers have lost 3 of their last 5, losing to Derby County (2-1), Queens Park Rangers (3-2) and Ipswich Town (2-0).

Sergej Jakirovic’s side show they are here to be taken seriously at the weekend though when they travelled to then-second placed Stoke City. Despite going behind to a Sorba Thomas stunner, the East Yorkshire-based side rallied with goals from Semi Ajayi and Joe Gelhardt to steel the 3 points.

Middlesbrough are also a team hoping to reach the Premier League this season and have been in and around the automatic promotion places since the first ball was kicked. They lost just 1 of their opening 12 matches, although the departure of head coach Rob Edwards to Wolves last month was an unwanted conundrum.

As such, it isn’t a surprise to see that form dipped, including a pair of defeats to Watford (3-0) and Coventry City (4-2). The last of those was somewhat of a hammer blow, especially as they recovered from 2 goals down to concede twice late on against the league leaders.

Kim Hellberg was finally appointed last week, winning his first game in charge against Derby (2-1).

Boro won both games against their division rivals last season, including a narrow 1-0 victory at the MKM Stadium in January. Hull’s last triumph in this fixture came in 2023, although they haven’t beaten the Teessiders at home since 2021.

Overall, Middlesbrough have the stronger record in this fixture, winning 34 of the previous 76 clashes. Hull have 22 victories, whilst the pair have played out 20 draws, the last of which was in April 2024.
