Norwich City Set To End Managerial Saga

Norwich City are set to end their search for a new head coach by naming Philippe Clement as Liam Manning’s successor.

The Canaries opted to part company with Johannes Hoff Thorup in April after an underwhelming season, despite signing the Dane to a 3-year deal in the summer of 2024. Jack Wilshere steered the team until the end of the campaign, allowing the East Anglians to tempt Liam Manning to switch play-off semi-finalists Bristol City for Carrow Road in June.

The 40-year-old had emerged as one of the top managers in the Championship following his heroics at Ashton Gate. However, he was unable to replicate that success at his new club and found himself under insurmountable pressure following a run of games which saw Norwich fail to pick up a win since August.

2-1 home defeat against Leicester City on November 8th was their 7th successive loss in front of their own supporters and ultimately proved to be the final straw. Following the game, it was announced that the former Oxford United boss would leave with immediate effect.

Extensive Search Undertaken During International Break

The timing of the announcement worked in Norwich’s favour. The Championship is currently in the middle of a 2-week break due to the latest round of international fixtures, meaning they have had ample time to find a replacement before this weekend’s clash with Birmingham City.

They’ve had competition though. Middlesbrough, Southampton and Swansea City have also found themselves in a similar position, meaning there has been a scramble to secure the signature of the ideal candidate.

The 2-time League Cup winners have been linked with a number of names throughout the past 10 days. This has included Gary O’Neil, who had also been named as a potential target for Middlesbrough and Swansea. However, it was confirmed yesterday that he was out of the running.

Former Blackburn Rovers boss Jon Dahl Tomasson had been interviewed for the position, whilst Russell Martin was also believed to have been in the frame following his exit from Rangers. The 39-year-old has ties with the Canaries having made over 300 appearances for the club as a player.

Norwich Edge Closer To Appointment

News emerged this morning that Norwich are hoping to make an announcement later today that another former Rangers man has won the race to become the next head coach. According to various reports, Philippe Clement will take on his first managerial role in England after leaving Scotland in February.

The 51-year-old had a brief spell in the Premier League with Coventry City as a player during the 1998/99 season before returning to his native Belgium. Upon retiring in 2011, he took on various positions in the Belgian top flight, including former club Club Brugge.

After winning 3 league titles, including 1 with Genk, Clement made the move to France with Monaco. However, he was sacked after failing to land a European spot in 2023.

This took him to Rangers, where he won the League Cup just 2 months after his appointment. He was unable to break the stranglehold of rivals Celtic though, leading to his dismissal in February this year.

It is said that his position at Norwich will start immediately ahead of Saturday’s return to action, with an announcement expected later today.
