Middlesbrough Issue Rallying Call After Rob Edwards Exit

Middlesbrough have issued a rallying call to supporters following the departure of head coach Rob Edwards to Premier League outfit Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The 42-year-old’s expected exit from the Riverside Stadium was confirmed earlier today. The announcement followed a week of increasing frustration, starting with Wolves’ initial approach last week.

The West Midlands-based outfit were rebuffed in their attempt to bring Edwards to Molinuex, although it soon became apparent that that would not be the end of the matter. Speculation was then fuelled when their pre-match press conference was cancelled ahead of Saturday’s clash with Birmingham City.

Following that, it was reported that the former Luton Town boss had not taken control of first team training and had instead entered showdown talks with Boro chiefs. Saturday morning saw the club announce that first team coach Adi Viveash would lead the team later that afternoon.

Viveash Oversees Return To Winning Ways

Edwards had enjoyed an excellent start to life on Teesside after signing a 3-year deal in the summer. After missing out on a place in the play-offs in back-to-back seasons, the early indications have been that Boro are likely to be serious promotion contenders this time around.

Their 8-game unbeaten run came to an end at the beginning of October following a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Portsmouth. Although they followed that with successive wins, they fell out of the automatic promotion places with a run of 2 draws and a loss prior to last Saturday.

Viveash was in the dugout on Saturday for the visit of Birmingham, where he was backed by a voracious home support. They eventually secured a narrow 2-1 victory, which saw them move above second-placed Stoke City following their narrow defeat against leaders Coventry City.

Middlesbrough Confirm Resignation

The world’s worst kept secret was officially confirmed this afternoon, with Middlesbrough stating that Edwards had resigned from his position. This was followed by a statement thanking supporters for the unity they delivered on Saturday and urged that to continue moving forward:

“Middlesbrough FC can confirm that Rob Edwards has now officially resigned his post as head coach after agreeing a contract with Wolves.

“Rob had signed a three-year contract with ourselves during the summer, but after he made it clear he was keen to join Wolves, we reluctantly agreed a figure of compensation for both himself and one of his first team coaches, Harry Watling.

“On Saturday the Riverside came together as one, players, staff, and supporters, and you could feel the sense of unity which is at the core of our club. To everyone involved, we would like to say thank you.

“Adi Viveash took charge of team affairs last Saturday and will continue to do so during the interim period.

“Let’s stay together. UTB.”

Early frontrunners to take the position on a full time basis include Gary O’Neil, Steven Gerrard, Tony Mowbray and Carlos Corberan. Boro return to action following the international break when they travel to Oxford United on November 22nd.
