Coventry City manager Frank Lampard has admitted his side were ‘ordinary’ as they fell to their first defeat of the season at Wrexham has night.
The Sky Blues travelled to North Wales on the back of 6 successive wins and hoping to extend their lead at the top of the Championship. They have been the most entertaining side to watch in the EFL this season, having scored 34 goals in 12 league outings prior to last night.
It appeared as if another victory was on the cards when Ephron Mason-Clark gave the visitors a first half lead, one which they held until the break. However, Wrexham reacted in spectacular fashion in the second period when Welsh international Kieffer Moore helped himself to a hat trick.
A late consolation from Tatsuhiro Sakamoto proved in vain as the last unbeaten record in the EFL fell.

Lampard Issues Rallying Call
Barring a remarkable turn of events in Middlesbrough’s visit to Watford this afternoon, Coventry will still end the weekend top of the division. They welcome Sheffield United to the CBS Arena on Tuesday, where Lampard has laid down the law to his squad. Speaking after the game, the former Chelsea boss said:
“It’s a difficult match and we knew that before with the way that they play and the atmosphere and the environment here. I smelt it at half time. We were 1-0 up but I could smell it myself and we just dropped a bit.
“Maybe that happens when you’re 12 unbeaten and you win six on the bounce. We can’t believe our own hype and I’m the one that’s defusing it all the time.
“Everyone’s getting excited and this league’s long. Don’t worry, we’re good, but this is what happens to normal teams. We haven’t been that so we better show in our next games what we really are again.”

Extraordinary Coventry Turn ‘Ordinary’
Wrexham have to be praised for how they came out after half time and thoroughly deserved their win. Continuing, Lampard claimed his team were ordinary, with their usual high standards dropping at the crucial moment:
“This team has been extraordinary for 12 games. To do what we do in the Championship, not many can do it. Today we were ordinary in our performance and levels dropped a bit. We’ve had a challenging week because we’ve lost players throughout the back four.
“Part of our strength is trying to remain consistent, particularly at the back end of the pitch, but that’s not pointing at the players that came on in those areas necessarily. That’s looking at us as a whole and saying we were not quite at it today and that’s what football and this league does to you.”
Second-placed Middlesbrough could move level on points with the leaders with a win at Vicarage Road this afternoon. Meanwhile, Wrexham climbed into the top half of the table for the first time since earning promotion from League One in May.
