Southampton manager Will Still insists he will take the blame as he watched his side blow a goal lead for the second successive game.
The 33-year-old arrived at St Mary’s in the summer with a reputation as one of Europe’s brightest young coaches. After performing stellar jobs with French Ligue 1 outfits Reims and Lens, he was seen as the ideal candidate to guide the Saints back into the Premier League at the first time of asking.
It’s far from gone to plan though. Since beating Wrexham on the opening day, the Hampshire-based club have won just once in the corresponding 11 Championship games, leaving Still on the brink.
Still Expects Calls For His Head
Southampton travelled to Blackburn on Saturday hoping to reverse their fortunes. The game came 4 days after they had blown a goal lead away at Bristol City before losing 3-1, and this one followed a similar pattern.

“I expected it. I don’t have a problem with it.
“They can be angry and want me out, it is what it is – I know what it looks like, and I know what it feels like.
“But we have to keep going and look at the bigger picture, and the bigger picture is we need to score goals.”
Missed Opportunities
Southampton garnered six shots on target at Ewood Park and had a goal ruled out for offside, but were made to pay for their wastefulness. Continuing, Still bemoaned his side’s lack of ruthlessness in front of goal:
“Same story, different day. We go 1-0 up, and should be two or three goals up – don’t do it.
“Then we make a couple of mistakes and concede two really poor goals, and it looks exactly the same as it has the last few weeks.
“We haven’t taken the chances, and we I know what that looks like, but someone has got to take the blame, and I’ll take the blame.

“It is probably the worst feeling in the world, especially when you see how the game plays out and what it looks like.
“The last three games are perfect proof that as long as we don’t score, it’s going to put ourselves under a bit of pressure, and when you are 1-0 up, you leave the opposition in the game.”
Writer’s View
It looks as it if it going to take a miracle for Will Still to turn his career around at Southampton. It appears as if the view from supporters if for him to be sacked and it will take a monumental effort to get them back on side.
Although the Saints narrowly avoided becoming the worst side in Premier League history when they beat Derby County’s record 11-point haul by a single point, they still harboured ambitions of challenging for promotion. However, a relegation battle is now far more likely than a top 6 finish.
Southampton host Preston North End on Saturday, where it remains to be seen as to whether the 33-year-old will be in charge.
