Peterborough United Boss Makes Stark Sack Admission

Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson has admitted his future is insecure after a dreadful first quarter of the season.

A busy summer of incomings and outgoings meant that Posh entered the campaign with a fresh feel to their squad. Out went familiar faces such as Kwame Poku, Ricky-Jade Jones, Hector Kyprianou and Emmanuel Fernandez, whilst no fewer than 11 new signings arrived at the Weston Homes Stadium.

This led to a difficult start, with the Cambridgeshire-based side picking up just a single point from their opening 7 matches. They finally got their first win of the campaign with a 2-1 victory over Wycombe Wanderers in mid-September before following that with a 1-0 triumph over Plymouth Argyle a week later.

Reality soon set in though when they were brushed aside by Lincoln City in a result which angered owner Darragh MacAnthony. Another defeat at Bolton Wanderers earlier this month saw Ferguson’s team return to the bottom of the table.

Ferguson Walking A Tightrope

There’s little doubt that Peterborough have perhaps had the toughest start to the season over any other club in League One. However, they now face back-to-back fixtures against teams in and around them near the bottom of the table.

They start tomorrow with a trip to Burton Albion before hosting Blackpool next weekend. There’s little doubt that if they lose both of those outings, the manager will find himself under serious pressure.

This is a fact that the 53-year-old accepts. Speaking to BBC Radio Cambridgeshirehe addressed the situation:

“We’ve got to find a way to get a run of wins going – we can’t keep waiting, it has to start.

“The chairman is always very open with his views and honest in his views, whether out of the public domain or when he does his podcasts.

“It’s not rocket science this game of football. It is simple and especially in terms of my job as a manager. If I don’t start winning games, the inevitable is going to happen.”

Posh Targeting Narrow Win

Burton have hit a run of good form recently and are unbeaten in 3 games. Despite that, Ferguson knows exactly where his side need to improve and is targeting a gritty performance at the Pirelli Stadium:

“The two boxes are where we are struggling, and that’s where we’ve got to improve, the players know it.

“Perhaps it [playing style] is a confidence thing, but I do think it’s in there. If we go to Burton and win 1-0, no one really cares – the entertaining part of it, people are just interested in winning a game of football.”

Writer’s View

This feels like the next two weeks will be a defining moment in Peterborough’s season. If they can get 4-6 points from their fixtures against Burton and Blackpool, it could kickstart their campaign. However, another couple of defeats will see them begin to be cut adrift at the bottom of the table.

Darren Ferguson has had plenty of credit in the bank for the job he has done at London Road over the years. It seems that is starting to run out though and he knows that the next fortnight will be a huge factor on whether he remains in charge heading into November.
