Cozier-Duberry Magic: Bolton Wanderers Complete Sensational Comeback Victory At Huddersfield Town

Bolton Wanderers shocked Huddersfield Town with 2 stoppage-time goals to secure a deserved victory at their promotion rivals.

Despite an early goal for the home side, Bolton and Amario Cozier-Duberry’s second-half pressure finally paid dividends to give the Trotters their first away victory of the season.

What Happened & Why It Matters

Alfie May had already been denied by a teammate before the Terriers took a 7th-minute lead. Ruben Roosken delivered the corner for Leo Castledine to rise highest and head home, giving the hosts the perfect start.

But Bolton provided a quick response, twice going close through Max Conway’s stinging effort and Jordi Osei-Tutu’s misguided header. The Trotters’ chances kept on coming, with Conway once again finding Lee Nicholls difficult to beat, after a Terriers defender had hit the deck, leaving him with a clear sight of goal.

Cozier-Duberry, who caused the Terriers’ defence problems all night, found Mason Burstow in the area, but he lifted his effort over the top via a deflection. Before the break, May had two further opportunities to extend the hosts’ lead. After dropping to the edge of the box to reach a cross, his volleyed effort was deflected over, before cutting inside for Teddy Sharman-Lowe to parry away.

It was a fairly lacklustre start to the second period, before Bolton ramped up the pressure after the hour mark. Burstow had a header denied by Nicholls, before a big moment arrived from John McAtee, moments after being introduced. A mazy run from Conway saw him weave past numerous Huddersfield men, sending a perfect ball through for McAtee. But, after rounding the Terriers goalkeeper, he couldn’t find the finish and fell in search of an unlikely penalty.

Soon after, Josh Dacres-Cogley saw an effort blocked, before another Burstow header again failed to trouble Huddersfield’s number 22. Then, Osei-Tutu went on a run that took him to the byline, sending an agonising ball across goal that evaded a pink shirt in the middle. A succession of corners with a quarter of an hour remaining was the last real moment of note before stoppage time.

In the third minute of 6 added, Bolton finally got their equaliser. Cozier-Duberry provided the cross, and Sam Dalby, inbetween two Terriers defenders, headed off-balance back across goal and incredibly found the far corner with a superb effort. But, there was still time for even later drama.

From a Huddersfield attack, Aaron Morley began the counter. His crossfield ball was picked up by Burstow, who in turn played an inch-perfect ball into Cozier-Duberry. Only a goal was missing from his performance, and he grabbed one in the fifth minute of stoppage time, thumping home to send the away end into frenzy.

Reaction, Impact, & What Comes Next

Wanderers leapfrog Huddersfield, and are now only outside the Play-Off places by a point, albeit having played 2 more games than sixth-placed Lincoln City. But they can bask in their first away victory in 10 games, since defeating local rivals Wigan Athletic at the start of April. This result was even more surprising given Huddersfield’s strong home record this term, keeping of their clean sheets at the Accu Stadium.

After an excellent performance from Cozier-Duberry, it was only right that he got his due reward with the two-goal contributions right at the death. He caused the Terriers’ backline trouble all evening, and they simply couldn’t cope. Lee Grant’s side backed further and further off in the second period, and were dealt the harshest of lessons for their lack of attacking endeavour in the second 45 minutes.

A Thursday night game means an extended period of rest before either side are next in action. Bolton have an early kick-off against high-flying Cardiff City in 8 days’ time, while Huddersfield are on the road at Wycombe Wanderers. And the next instalment of this fixture is right around the corner, after the two sides were drawn against each other in the FA Cup in 2 weeks’ time.
