Danny Cowley was delighted with his Colchester United side after they came from behind to beat high-flying Grimsby Town at Blundell Park, as reported by The Gazette.
Micah Mbick scored twice to secure a 2-1 win for The U’s.
Resilience & Grit Build On Ruthlessness
Last weekend, Cowley was delighted with his side’s ruthlessness and clinical finishing in a resounding 6-2 win over Chesterfield. This week brought a different type of performance.
Playing away against a side that could have jumped into the top three with a win posed a different threat. The U’s needed to adapt.
“I thought it was a really organised, professional away performance from us.”“It was a better performance from us [than Chesterfield] in the respect that last week we were ruthless and clinical and found a really good rhythm in our play and this week, we had to do the things that maybe we’re not so good at and had to maybe suffer in that early part when we conceded and they had their tails up.”“We had to dig in and show resilience and grit, and that gave us the foundation.”

A Great Win Against ‘Best Team In League’
The Colchester boss was full of praise for David Artell’s Mariners, who he had labelled the best team he had seen in the division this season.
“It was a really good win for us, against a very good Grimsby team. I meant it when I said in the lead-up that they’re the best team that we’ve seen this year in our division.”“It was a terrific performance and a really well-deserved win.”
Mentality Pleases The Manager
Danny Cowley was delighted with this excellent away performance and felt his players stood up well against a good opponent, coming through some tough moments, including having to quieten the Blundell Park crowd.
“It’s never easy, because the supporters got behind them and we had to suffer for a little period but we came through it.”“I thought we showed a real level of resilience and determination and grit, which are qualities that this group is still trying to develop.”
On-loan Charlton Athletic striker Micah Mbick scored both goals for The U’s, but the 18-year-old was disappointed not to be leaving Cleethorpes with the match ball.
“Micah got two goals, and the first thing he said was that he should have had three! I think that just shows you the mentality that he has.”“I thought as the away team, we had a lot of the ball as well and we’ve got some good technical players, so that was a positive.”
Colchester United move up to 16th after this victory and are in action next Saturday when they welcome Harrogate Town to the JobServe Community Stadium.
Writer’s View
Colchester United have been accused in some quarters of playing negative football, but 6 goals last week and a dominant xG against Grimsby suggest they are good value for their wins at present. The U’s certainly have the players to cause teams problems and create chances.
Consistency is key for Cowley’s side as they don’t want to leave their playoff charge too late, as it proved to be last season.
