Leyton Orient will not let manager Richie Wellens depart cheaply after receiving an approach from division rivals Luton Town, according to journalist Alan Nixon.
The 45-year-old has been a big hit at Brisbane Road since taking over the role in 2022. He won the League Two title a year later, earning the O’s a place in League One for the first time since 2015.
Their debut campaign in the third tier saw them achieve an admirable mid-table finish, but it was last season where they caught the eye. Under the guidance of Wellens, Orient reached the play-offs only to lose 1-0 in the final against Charlton Athletic.
Despite that, the former Doncaster Rovers boss has become a popular name amongst bookmakers over the past few months when it comes to vacant positions in the Championship and League One. However, it now appears as if Luton are ready to take the leap.
Luton Keen On Wellens But Face Competition
Luton are on the lookout for a new gaffer after parting company with Matt Bloomfield last week. Despite playing in the Premier League just 16 months ago, they now find themselves 11th in League One.
Following a 2-0 defeat against Stevenage last weekend, the Hatters released a statement confirming the news:
“Luton Town Football Club has today parted company with manager Matt Bloomfield.
“Matt joined the Hatters in January from Wycombe Wanderers and despite overseeing a run of just two defeats in 11 games leading into the final day of the 2024/25 season, was unable to prevent relegation from the Championship following defeat at West Bromwich Albion.
“Performances and results from the opening 11 matches of the current campaign in League One have fallen below the levels expected, and the Board of Directors has taken the difficult decision to relieve Matt, his assistant Richard Thomas, first team coach Lee Harrison and first team analyst Ben Cirne of their duties.
“The Board wishes to thank Matt, Richard, Lee and Ben for their efforts during a difficult period for the Club and wishes them the very best for their future careers.”
According to Nixon, Luton have informed Orient of their interest but have been told they will have to pay £1,000,000 for his services. They’re not the only club keen though, with Blackpool also said to be considering an approach.
The Tangerines have endured a dreadful opening few months of the season, resulting in the departure of Steve Bruce at the weekend.
Writer’s View
Leyton Orient protected themselves from this situation in the summer when they opted to extend Richie Wellens’ existing deal until 2028. They were fully aware that it was likely that clubs would come knocking for his services and it’s no surprise to see Luton the first to knock on the door. The Hatters know that they have to get out of the division at the first time of asking and Wellens is a manager that has bags of experience at this level. They will be able to afford the compensation, which may prove to be a major hurdle for Blackpool.
