Plymouth Argyle play host to Ryan Lowe’s Wigan Athletic side at Home Park in Sky Bet League One on Saturday afternoon.
Our Three Predictions for Plymouth Argyle vs Wigan Athletic
- First Prediction: Match to end in a draw – 23/10
- Second Prediction: Over 1.5 goals to be scored – 3/10
- Third Prediction: Both teams to score – 8/11
First Prediction for Plymouth Argyle vs Wigan Athletic – Match to end in a draw – 23/10
Although Plymouth have really picked it up in terms of form in the last few weeks, Wigan are another one of the many sides in this league who will be tough to beat. The quality of League One is getting stronger every year, especially with the money that these two sides, as well as many other sides, have spent this summer. In that regard, neither side will be happy with the start they’ve made this season, both sides aiming to make it back into the Championship, the hosts after suffering relegation last season, especially. There’s nothing but goal difference which separates the sides at this point, both sides on 12 points after 10 games, the away side only a place higher on goal difference, meaning this could be a close-knit game between two sides who are desperately looking to improve. Interestingly, Plymouth have struggled at Home Park so far, winning just two of their five home games, whilst Wigan have also struggled on their travels away from home, picking up no wins and two draws. Whilst Plymouth have not drawn a single game in the league this season, they could see their first this weekend, especially as Wigan tend to be their bogey team, the side not winning against the Latics since 2004.

Second Prediction for Plymouth Argyle vs Wigan Athletic – Over 1.5 goals to be scored – 3/10
One thing both sides have proved they can do on multiple occasions this season is score goals. Tom Cleverley’s side have the joint third best record in the division, scoring 15 goals in 10 games, whilst their opponents, Wigan, have the joint fourth best record in the division and have only scored one less goal, with 14 goals. This means that on average, per game, the hosts score 1.50 goals, whilst the away team score 1.40 goals. However, one problem that both sides also possess is their inability to keep goals out at the other end. For example, the Greens have the joint-worst record in the third tier when it comes to goals conceded, and have conceded 18 goals in 10 games, whilst Wigan’s record is slightly better, but it still isn’t a great record to have. Lowe’s side has seen 15 goals shipped into the back of their net this season, a far cry from how defensively solid they were last season, which is currently the joint third-worst record. Again, neither side has an average of lower than 1.50 goals conceded per game, meaning this encounter between these two sides could be very high scoring, despite the fact that it also might be a tight affair.
Third Prediction for Plymouth Argyle vs Wigan Athletic – Both sides to score – 8/11
To back up my previous point, it’s clear to see why both sides are backed to score in this encounter. In their last five league matches alone, Plymouth have scored nine goals and conceded seven, whilst Wigan have scored seven but conceded nine. In their last two fixtures combined, the home side have scored 10 goals, including four last weekend against Burton Albion, and have only failed to score on four occasions in all competitions. It seems like both of these sides just rely on their goal-scoring ability, and still, although we are 10 league games into the season, they aren’t defensively sound by any means, with Wigan conceding eight goals in their last three games alone.

Full Preview of the Game – Last Results and Head-To-Head
As mentioned above, both sides have had very mixed starts to their seasons. The only thing currently separating these two sides is goal difference, with both sides sitting on 12 points after 10 games played. So far, the hosts have won four games and lost six, but have won three of their last five league games, whilst their opponents have won three, drawn three and lost four times.
With neither side starting particularly well, another three points for either side would be crucial and very useful at this stage. It’s no secret that with the money spent in the summer, both sides will be looking to be in and around the top half of the table, with the hosts looking to bounce back immediately from relegation last season, and Wigan looking to return to the Championship after three years away.
Interestingly, these sides have only played each other six times in recent years, with all of the ties coming in the third tier. The away side have won four of these six clashes, whilst the other two have ended level after 90 minutes. Argyle haven’t won against these opponents since 2004. Last time these sides met, the game ended in a 1-1 draw at the DW Stadium, Luke Jephcott’s goal for Plymouth was ruled out by a late Jack Whatmough strike, which helped the Latics to promotion to the Championship.
