Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head-To-Head:
Wycombe Wanderers started their season poorly, failing to win any of their opening six League One matches, form that would see Mike Dodds relieved of his duties and replaced at the helm by Mike Duff.
The former Huddersfield Town manager got off to a winning start at home to Northampton Town thanks to an inspired display from Luke Leahy. Goals from Daniel Harvie and George Abbott, both from Leahy assists, were enough to see off the Cobblers.
Duff’s positive start continued with a Carabao Cup triumph on the road at Wigan Athletic, with Coalan Boyce-Munce and Donnell McNielly securing their passage to the fourth round. Last time out, Wanderers fell to defeat at the hands of playoff chasing AFC Wimbledon, who raced into a 2-0 lead thanks to Omar Bugiel and Steve Seddon. Ewan Henderson pulled a goal back for Duff’s side but it proved to be nothing more than a consolation.
Due to their poor start, Wycombe Wanderers find themselves in 20th in the League One table having lost six of their opening ten matches, winning just twice. The Chairboys have scored 11 goals in ten matches, with Fred Onyedinma scoring two of those and Luke Leahy providing three assists. Wycombe have conceded 13 times at an average of 1.3 per match and have kept two clean sheets.
Barnsley’s last five league games have seen the Tykes win on just two occasions, losing the other three. That run began with a first league loss of the campaign away at AFC Wimbledon, going down 2-0 thanks to Matt Stevens and Antwoine Hackford.
Next up was a crucial Yorkshire derby against Huddersfield at Oakwell and it was back to winning ways thanks to a Davis Keillor-Dunn brace and a Luca Connell strike right on half time. After the international break, Barnsley were back in action as they welcomed Reading to South Yorkshire. Josh Earl, Keillor-Dunn and Adam Phillips all scored to edge a five goal thriller.
A late defeat then followed on the road against Blackpool who won the match thanks to a 98th minute Jordan Brown strike. After a 6-0 Carabao Cup hammering from Brighton & Hove Albion, a second straight league defeat followed, this time a first at home as Port Vale were 2-0 victors at Oakwell thanks to Jordan Gabriel and Ryan Croasdale.
Conor Hourihane’s side find themselves ocupying eighth in the Championship after nine matches, with five wins and three losses to their name. Hourihane’s side have scored 14 goals with top scorer Davis Keillor-Dunn having five as Adam Phillip leads the assists chart with two. Defensively, the Tykes have conceded 12 goals at an average of 1.3 per match and have kept just on clean sheet.
Barnsley have the edge over Wycombe Wanderers over the last ten meetings between the sides, registering six wins to the Wycombe’s four. It was Wycombe, however, who took four points from a possible six last season with a win at home and a point on the road.
In the meeting at Oakwell, the Chairboys looked to have snatched a late win thanks to an 85th minute Richard Kone strike only to be denied four minutes later when Marc Roberts poked home from a corner. Wycombe were firmly in the hunt for a top two finish when Barnsley travelled south to Buckinghamshire and fell behind to a Jonathan Russell strike on ten minutes. Kone equalised from the penalty spot just after the hour before grabbing a dramatic winner in the fifth minute of added time.
Barnsley completed the double over Wycombe in the 2023-24 campaign as they made the end of season playoffs. It was Sam Cosgrove’s turn to score a late winner for the Tykes as his 91st minute strike secured all three points at Oakwell before again getting on the scoresheet at Adams Park in a 4-2 away win.
Wycombe Wanderers have scored 13 times in the ten meetings to Barnsley’s 16 strikes, with both sides keeping two clean sheets apiece.
