Former MK Dons & Rotherham United Striker Pens Fresh League Two Deal

Chesterfield striker Will Grigg has committed his future to the Spireites by signing a new contract that runs until the summer of 2027.

The veteran forward has been a key figure since arriving at the SMH Group Stadium in 2023, and his extension will take him into a fourth season with the club.

Proven Goalscorer

Grigg, 34, has scored 40 goals in 90 appearances for Chesterfield, proving pivotal as the club secured the National League title in 2024. He followed that up with 14 goals during their first campaign back in League Two last season and opened his account for this term with a header in Saturday’s 4-1 victory over Newport County.

Reflecting on his decision to stay, Grigg said the support of the club’s ownership, staff and supporters made the choice straightforward.

“From the moment I signed for Chesterfield, it’s been an incredible journey and an honour to be part of this fantastic club. Ash and Phil trusted me to be part of moving this club forward and I’m so grateful to be able to continue that journey.

“The fans took me in from my first day and they are a massive reason as to why I wanted to stay. This is probably the quickest contract I’ve ever signed because I think everyone knows how much I’ve enjoyed my time here and I wanted that to continue.”

Career Achievements

Over nearly two decades in the game, Grigg has become one of the most prolific forwards in the English Football League, closing in on 200 career goals across almost 600 appearances. His promotion record is impressive, having gone up with Brentford, MK Dons, Wigan Athletic, Sunderland and Rotherham United in addition to Chesterfield.

His performances have earned individual recognition too, including the remarkable accolade of being named among Europe’s top 25 players in 2016 – the same year he was ranked alongside the likes of Paul Pogba in UEFA’s poll.

The new deal is seen as a boost to Chesterfield’s hopes of making another step forward. With the Spireites targeting promotion to League One, retaining a proven finisher with vast experience at higher levels provides them with a reliable option in attack. Grigg’s influence extends beyond goals, with his hold-up play and leadership qualities adding further value to a squad pushing for success.

Writer’s View

Securing Grigg until 2027 is a statement of intent from Chesterfield. For a player who has consistently delivered goals throughout his career, the extension underlines the belief that he still has plenty to contribute.

While younger talents will continue to emerge, having a forward of Grigg’s pedigree provides both stability and inspiration. If the Spireites are to achieve back-to-back promotions, his knack for decisive moments could once again prove crucial.
