Barrow have confirmed the signing of midfielder Charlie McCann on a contract until 2027, with the option of an additional year.
The 23-year-old joins as a free agent after leaving Forest Green Rovers in the summer, strengthening the Bluebirds’ midfield options for their League Two campaign.
Proven Record at Forest Green
McCann arrives at Holker Street with strong recent form behind him. During his two-and-a-half years at Forest Green, the midfielder made 82 league appearances and scored 15 goals, including 11 strikes in the 2024/25 season. His contributions also included a series of assists, underlining his creativity and end product in the final third.

Excitement at New Chapter
Speaking to Barrow’s official channels, McCann expressed his delight at the move:
“I’m over the moon to finally get it sorted and I can’t wait to get started.
“I think the interest has been there for a while, but there’s been certain different situations which have slowed it down or whatever, but once I spoke to the Gaffer and Peady [Craig Pead] and all the rest of the staff, I knew straight away I wanted to come here..”
He will wear the number 14 shirt and is expected to add a mix of energy, vision and goals from midfield as Barrow look to climb from 17th place in the League Two table.
Career Path and International Recognition
Born in Coventry, McCann started in Coventry City’s academy before being snapped up by Manchester United in 2017. After four years at Old Trafford, he moved to Rangers, making his professional debut in the Scottish Cup in 2022.
His performances have also earned him international recognition, having represented Northern Ireland at under-21 level after previously playing for Republic of Ireland youth sides. He moved south in January 2023, joining then-League One side Forest Green Rovers months before their first of back-to-back relegations.
His time at Forest Green saw him become a regular starter before departing by mutual consent earlier this year.
Writer’s View
McCann’s arrival looks like a shrewd piece of business for Barrow. At 23, he combines solid experience in League One and the National League with a clear eye for goal. His development through Manchester United and Rangers’ systems shows his pedigree, while his standout season at Forest Green proved his ability to deliver consistently.
For Barrow, struggling in the lower reaches of League Two, he could provide both quality and leadership in a crucial stage of their campaign. They’ve recruited well, with the likes of Tyler Walker and Tom Barkhuizen, and should pose a threat in League Two this season.
