Colchester United have sanctioned loan moves for academy graduates Max Joliffe and Frankie Edwards.
The U’s are struggling in League Two this season, with manager Danny Cowley bemoaning the lack of physicality in the squad as a result of recent injuries.
However, the two players exiting are youth team prospects, not solutions to the ongoing issues, and will benefit from men’s football to help boost the squad. The pair head into non-league football in search of regular senior minutes, with Joliffe joining Billericay Town and Edwards linking up with Hornchurch.
Midfielder Joliffe Makes Next Step
Joliffe, a 20-year-old midfielder, signed for Colchester in 2022 after starting his football journey in Arsenal’s youth system. He penned his first professional contract in the summer of 2024 and spent time on loan with Maldon & Tiptree earlier this season. On his return, he was handed a first-team debut as a substitute in the 3-0 victory against Fleetwood Town in March.
The youngster has now made the switch to Isthmian Premier League side Billericay Town on an initial one-month loan. Subject to paperwork clearance, he is expected to be involved in their FA Cup tie against Hednesford Town on Saturday.

Edwards Joins Hornchurch Promotion Push
Centre-back Edwards came through Colchester’s academy ranks, having previously been on the books at Barnet and West Ham as a schoolboy. He has represented the U18s and U21s for the U’s and already enjoyed a successful spell at Chelmsford City earlier in his development.
The teenager now joins Hornchurch, who currently sit top of the National League South and are pushing for promotion. Edwards is set to be involved in their home fixture against Dover Athletic this weekend, pending final approval.
Writer’s View
These moves underline Colchester United’s commitment to providing their academy players with valuable experience in senior football. Joliffe has already had a taste of first-team action, and regular game time at Billericay will further his development.
For Edwards, a loan to a promotion-chasing Hornchurch side offers the chance to play in a competitive environment that should accelerate his progress. Both youngsters will be hoping to return to the JobServe Community Stadium stronger and closer to regular EFL action.
