Our Three Predictions for Northampton Town vs Bolton Wanderers

  • First Prediction: Match to end in a draw – 5/2
  • Second Prediction: Over 1.5 goals to be scored – 3/10
  • Third Prediction: Mason Burstow to score at any time – 37/20

First Prediction for Northampton Town vs Bolton Wanderers – Match to end in a draw

Neither side has had an awful start to the season, the hosts winning three of their opening eight games, which currently sees them occupy 15th place, three points above the relegation zone. Their opponents for this clash have won the same number of games but have lost significantly fewer, losing just once, while drawing five times so far. This leaves them in 10th spot on 14 points, just two off the play-off spots, but nine points off the automatic places. Although on paper, Steven Schumacher has the better squad in terms of personnel, this does not matter in the slightest in the third tier, and whilst Northampton have only lost once at home, Bolton are yet to win away, losing once, drawing three games. On top of this, Northampton have only lost once in their last five games, including a 3-0 win against Chelsea U21’s midweek, whilst the away side haven’t lost in five, and beat Manchester City U21’s by the same scoreline also in midweek. The recent form of these two sides implies that they are hard to beat, meaning this might be an evenly contested encounter at Sixfields on Saturday.

Second Prediction for Northampton Town vs Bolton Wanderers – Over 1.5 goals to be scored

What both sides have proved they can do well this season is defend their goal. Both sides have only conceded eight goals so far, which means they both have the joint-third defensive record in League One, only behind the likes of Cardiff City and Stevenage in terms of goals conceded. On average, Kevin Nolan’s side concede just one goal per game, whilst the record for Schumacher’s side sits at 0.89, having played one extra league game. However, on top of being rather defensively solid, the away side have proved they can also find the back of the net, scoring 14 league goals in nine games, which is again, the third-best record in the division. In addition, Wanderers have also scored seven goals across three cup games in two different competitions, including three in the EFL Cup on Tuesday. Whilst their opponents haven’t quite hit the same goalscoring highs, they upped their tally midweek also, with a 3-0 win over Chelsea U21’s, which will surely give them confidence going into this game. Bolton, on average, score 1.56 goals per game, and with all the other stats behind them, as well as comfortable midweek games, this game might well feature more than 1.5 goals scored.

Third Prediction for Northampton Town vs Bolton Wanderers – Mason Burstow to score at any time – 37/20

Hull City loanee Mason Burstow has really hit the ground running at Bolton since joining in the summer, scoring five goals in 10 games in all competitions so far. The 22-year-old has scored the same number of goals as the entire Cobblers team combined in the league, including three in his last five games, and does not look like slowing down any time soon. His five goals not only makes him his side’s top-scorer, but also makes him the joint-top scorer in the league, up with the likes of Northern Irish international Jamie Reid and Barnsley’s experienced striker Davis Keillor-Dunn. He’ll no doubt be looking for his sixth goal of the campaign on Saturday, hoping to help his side against a defensively strong Northampton side.

Full Preview of the Game – Last Results and Head-To-Head

As mentioned above, both sides have had very mixed starts to their season, the hosts sitting 15th, three points off the drop zone, whilst Bolton sit five places above in 10th, two points off sixth-placed Barnsley, who occupy the last play-off spot, but they have played one more game than their opponents for this clash. Nolan’s side have won three, drawn one and lost four, with Schumacher’s side winning three, drawing five, but only losing once.

The Cobblers only just survived in League One last season, and will be looking to push on from that, and secure another confortable season in the third tier, whilst it’s fair to say Wanderers will be looking for promotion to the Championship after seven seasons in the third tier and a dreadful season by their standards last time out, a season which saw them finish eighth, 10 points off the top six.

Since 2016, these sides have met six times, all six ties coming in League One. Interestingly, since 2016, Northampton have yet to win against these opponents, with Bolton winning five of the six clashes between these two sides. The other match ended level after 90 minutes. Last time these sides met, last season in January, Bolton came away with a 3-1 victory at home thanks to goals from George Thomason, Archie Collins and an own goal from Liam Shaw, who also coincidentally scored the only goal at the right end for the Cobblers.
