Our Three Predictions for Liverpool vs Southampton

  • First Prediction: Liverpool to win – 3/25
  • Second Prediction: Over 2.5 goals to be scored – 7/25
  • Third Prediction: Alexander Isak to score at any time – 57/100

First Prediction for Liverpool vs Southampton – Liverpool to win – 3/25

It should come as no surprise to see Premier League side Liverpool backed as favourites to win this tie, considering the form both sides find themselves in. Whilst the hosts are unbeaten this season in both the league and the Champions League, Southampton are struggling towards the bottom end of the second tier, winning just one league game and picking up six points out of a possible 18. The Reds have the best home form in the top flight, despite it being early days, and although manager Arne Slot will no doubt rotate his starting 11, his side are littered with key players; some of his rotation players are more than good enough to start for most other Premier League teams. The away side, however, have struggled rebuilding in the second tier after suffering relegation in embarrassing style, with manager Will Still, still getting to grips with management in England. On top of this, the Saints also have not won a game on the road in the league this season, their two away wins coming in this competition against League One side Northampton Town and Championship rivals Norwich City. Based on recent form and the quality of each side’s squad, there is no doubt why the hosts are considerable favourites to win this game at Anfield tomorrow evening.

Second Prediction for Liverpool vs Southampton – Over 2.5 goals to be scored – 7/25

Although Southampton haven’t got the best record when it comes to scoring goals and a good record when it comes to conceding them, again, the quality of their opponents will probably, unfortunately, be their downfall. The Reds have the best scoring record in the top flight, scoring 11 goals in five league games, as well as another three in one game against Atletico Madrid in the first gameday of the Champions League. However, Slot’s side don’t have the greatest record when it comes to conceding goals, the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Crystal Palace, Sunderland, Newcastle United and Aston Villa all having better records than Liverpool so far in the league, conceding five goals in five games, and an extra two, again in the Champions League against Atletico. On average, Liverpool score 2.2 goals per game, with Southampton scoring 1.17 goals per game, and have only failed to score in one game this season. In terms of defensive records, the Saints concede 1.5 goals per game, whilst Liverpool’s record is slightly better, sitting at one goal per game on average. Considering all the stats, there’s most likely going to be over 2.5 goals scored in this encounter.

Third Prediction for Liverpool vs Southampton – Alexander Isak to score at any time – 57/100

After the summer transfer saga involving Alexander Isak, Newcastle and Liverpool, the striker will be hoping to show why Liverpool paid the big bucks for him. The Swedish striker moved to England with the Magpies back in 2022, and scored 62 goals in 109 appearances in his three seasons at St James’ Park, before controversially jumping ship to Anfield this summer, the Reds paying a reported fee of around £125 million to get the Swede. After fitness issues, Isak has made his Liverpool debut from the bench, but he surely will get his first start against Southampton on Tuesday. With a hefty price tag, he’ll be keen to start his career at Anfield with a bang, and the best time to do it is tomorrow evening, against a side like the Saints, who will be shy of confidence after such a shaky start to their season.

Full Preview of the Game – Last Results and Head-To-Head

As mentioned above, the current Premier League champions come into this game on the back of six consecutive wins in all competitions, whilst recently relegated side Southampton haven’t had the greatest of starts under new manager Will Still, winning just one of six Championship fixtures.

There’s no doubt that these sides have completely different aspirations for this season, Slot’s side aiming for back-to-back league titles as well as more domestic and international success, whilst the Saints will be looking to return to the top flight after an extremely disappointing campaign last time out.

Since 2012, these sides have met each other a whopping 29 times, in three different types of competitions, including the Premier League, FA Cup and the Carabao Cup. The hosts have won 19 of these 29 ties, whilst their opponents have won six times. The other four matches ended level after 90 minutes. The most recent matchup between the two sides came at Anfield last season, Liverpool winning 3-1 thanks to second-half goals from Darwin Nunez and Mo Salah after the Saints took the lead through Will Smallbone.
