Huddersfield Town manager Lee Grant has highlighted his side’s main problem this season as their defensive frailties away from home, stating they must address them “very quickly”.
This follows the Terriers’ 3-1 defeat at Bradford City’s Valley Parade on Saturday.
A New Man at the Helm
Still early in his tenure, new manager Lee Grant has faced a challenging away record despite a promising start to Huddersfield Town’s League One campaign. Saturday’s 3-1 loss at Bradford City exposed the Terriers’ defensive frailties, mirroring earlier away defeats at Barnsley and Blackpool.
Huddersfield have had no trouble finding the net but struggle to prevent conceding on the road. Sitting sixth with 15 points from eight games, the Terriers have secured just one away win, conceding six goals across three away defeats while scoring five. At Blackpool in August, they fought back to lead 2-1, only to collapse late, resulting in a 3-2 loss. Similarly, at Barnsley, a 3-1 defeat followed a red card to goalkeeper Owen Goodman, with the Tykes capitalising on a shaky defence despite Huddersfield’s late goal.
Saturday’s backline featured goalkeeper Lee Nicholls, right-back Lasse Sørensen, centre-backs Joe Low and Matty Wallace, who was booked at Bradford, and left-back Seán Roughan, who has struggled to settle since joining from Lincoln City. This highlights Huddersfield’s issues with maintaining a consistent backline, with frequent changes, particularly at centre-half, in recent weeks.
With tough trips to Exeter City and Luton Town looming, Grant must urgently address these defensive lapses to keep Huddersfield’s promotion hopes alive.

Shadowing a Good Start
In stark contrast to their away form, Huddersfield Town have been formidable at home this season under Grant. Unbeaten at the John Smith’s Stadium, they’ve won all four home matches, scoring nine goals and conceding just two. This impressive run has secured 15 points, placing them sixth in the League One standings.
The Manager’s Views
Speaking to HTFC after Saturday’s defeat, Grant said:
“The group are working really hard and have been successful this season so far, but those three results look and feel similar, and they can’t be accepted. I can’t accept it, I don’t think the supporters want to accept that, and, most importantly, the players themselves are not happy with it, so we have to put it right.”
Writer’s View
Despite strong home form contrasted by troubles on the road, Grant is still new, and Huddersfield’s position in the third tier brings high expectations for promotion. Grant’s impressive summer signings show promise for a potential promotion push. With time on his side, their home resilience suggests they can meet those demands.
