First Prediction For Middlesbrough vs West Bromwich Albion – Match Result – Draw – 23/10
Friday night’s Championship fixture gives us a top-of-the-table clash to whet our appetites ahead of the weekend. Middlesbrough will take to the field as one of the three undefeated sides in the division and in pole position in the table. They’ve begun life under Rob Edwards in excellent fashion, although they did drop their first points of the season on Saturday when they twice came from behind to draw 2-2 with Preston North End. That result ended a run of four successive wins, having emerged with three points in their opening four outings against Swansea City, Millwall, Norwich City and Sheffield United.
West Brom are also in the early stages of a new era following the appointment of Ryan Mason in the summer. The former Tottenham Hotspur coach has also enjoyed an excellent start, although tasted defeat for the first time at the weekend when they lost 1-0 to Derby County at The Hawthorns. It was the second successive game in which they emerged winless in front of their own supporters, but they do boast a 100% record on the road with victories over Wrexham and Stoke City. Still, this is likely to be a cagey affair and they could cancel each other out as a result.
Second Prediction For Middlesbrough vs West Bromwich Albion – Both Teams To Score – 17/25
Middlesbrough have scored nine goals in their first five matches and look good value for their spot at the top of the table. They are yet to concede at the Riverside Stadium this season, winning both their games on Teesside 1-0 against Swansea and Sheffield United. Still, the international break looks to have derailed them somewhat defensively and they will count themselves lucky to have picked up a point at Preston. Rob Edwards had to watch his side come from behind twice, with the final equaliser coming in the 92nd minute.
With the exception of a 3-2 in over Wrexham last month, West Brom have hardly been prolific in front of goal. They relied on solitary goals to beat Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City, whilst they could only muster a 1-1 draw with Portsmouth. They did draw a blank on Saturday with their shock defeat against Derby, but that is the only game in all competitions in which they have failed to score. They will be confident they can at least find the net on Friday but they will have to be at their very best to keep a clean sheet, something which seems unlikely against a team averaging just under two goals a game.
Third Prediction For Middlesbrough vs West Bromwich Albion – Tommy Conway To Score Anytime – 8/5
Tommy Conway has been excellent for Middlesbrough since signing from Bristol City in the summer of 2024. He hit 13 goals in his debut season at the Riverside Stadium, which saw him linked with a transfer to Rangers during the recent transfer window. Although losing Finn Azaz to Southampton was a blow, keeping Conway was a boost to their potential promotion hopes.
The Scotland international got his tally up and running during the 2-1 win over Norwich City last month before scoring the only goal of the game in their narrow victory over Sheffield United a week later. He failed to find the net at the weekend in the draw with Preston, although did still chip in with an assist. It appears as if the attacker is getting better week by week and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him net his third of the campaign here.

Full Preview of the Game: Last Results and Head-To-Head
Middlesbrough are the early pacesetters in the Championship, having won four and drawn one of their opening five fixtures. They started the season with a narrow 1-0 home win over Swansea City before following that with a comfortable 3-0 over Millwall at The Den. A tricky trip to Norwich City was their first potential banana skin, but goals from Finn Azaz and Tommy Conway helped Rob Edwards’ side pick up another three points. Boro then hosted Sheffield United at just the right time, helping compound Ruben Selles’ misery with another 1-0 triumph at the Riverside Stadium. With their momenum in full flow, the international break proved an inconvenience and their return to action last weekend saw them drop their first points of the season. Edwards would have been pleased with his team’s reaction though, twice coming from behind to secure a 2-2 draw.
Ryan Mason will be somewhat pleased with his start at West Brom. They currently lie fifth in the table, although they could have been level on points with Middlesbrough had they beaten Derby County at The Hawthorns on Saturday. Instead, they suffered a shock 1-0 loss in what is their only defeat of the season. The Baggies began their campaign with a 1-0 win over Blackburn Rovers before an impressive 3-2 away victory at Wrexham. They’d have been disappointed to have only come away with a 1-1 draw when they hosted Portsmouth but instantly returned to winning ways with another 1-0 triumph, this time over Stoke City to hand the Potters their only reverse of the season thus far.
Middlesbrough have won the last three meetings between the pair, including a 2-0 victory at the Riverside Stadium in January. West Brom last emerged victorious in this fixture in August 2023, when they won 4-2 at The Hawthorns. However, they have not beaten Boro on their own patch since 2019. The Teessiders hold the superior record over the years, winning 45 of the previous 105 clashes. The Baggies have 36 victories to their name whilst 24 have ended in a draw.
