Two sides who pulled off important victories against all odds, have been pitted against each other in the latest EFL Cup round. Grimsby Town were the winners in an outstanding giant-killing against Manchester United, while Sheffield Wednesday earned a resilient progression against Leeds United.
The Owls will host a relatively in-form Grimsby side who are looking to gain admission to the third tier in a competitive League Two campaign, with clear favourites Chesterfield and Milton Keynes Dons yet to separate themselves from the other promotion hopefuls. Wednesday are in a financial mess under Dejphon Chansiri, which will more than likely culminate in a Championship relegation. The pair could meet next season if fortunes favour the Mariners, but for now, a Carabao Cup tie will test both’s resolve.
Our Three Predictions for Sheffield Wednesday vs Grimsby Town
- First Prediction: Grimsby Town to win 6/5
- Second Prediction: Over 1.5 first half goals 8/5
- Third Prediction: Jaze Kabia to score anytime 37/20

First Prediction for Sheffield Wednesday vs Grimsby Town – Grimsby Town to win 6/5
It is yet to be seen whether the priority will remain in the league for the Owls. Avoiding relegation seems highly unlikely, but Henrik Pedersen’s side would much prefer another season in the Championship than an EFL Cup run that may not extended much further beyond this third round tie. As seen against Leeds, Wednesday fielded a young, heavily-rotated team, with substitutions allowing first team players to help the club progress in a nervy penalty shootout.
Pedersen could rest a few much-needed players for a clash with Portsmouth next weekend. This may open up another opportunity for Grimsby to put up a great performance as underdogs. Hillsborough can be a tricky place to visit for lower-league sides, but the Mariners are looking to assert their attacking force on Tuesday. Wednesday haven’t scored in their last two league matches, losing 2-0 and 3-0 at home. With eight goals conceded in the Championship at Hillsborough – and not a single goal scored – Pedersen’s side could well lose to the second-highest goalscorers in League Two.
Second Prediction for Sheffield Wednesday vs Grimsby Town – Over 1.5 first half goals 8/5
A 3-0, first half lead against MK Dons, will surely suggest that Grimsby are more than capable of single-handedly seeing this bet land on their own. Against a weak Championship-rotated side full of youth academy prospects, David Artell’s team could capitalise on their quick-starting attacking threat in select games. This also landed in their exceptional win over Man United, with Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren both scoring inside the opening 30 minutes.
Bristol City were able to put three past Wednesday in the Owls’ latest home tie. These openers all came within the first 32 minutes and clearly shows how susceptible Pedersen’s side can be to an early onslaught. Kieffer Moore single-handedly fired Wrexham into a two-goal lead on the 23rd August, scoring twice in the first half.
Third Prediction for Sheffield Wednesday vs Grimsby Town – Jaze Kabia to score anytime 37/20
Jaze Kabia has been brilliant for the Mariners this season. Signing from non-league Truro City this summer, the 25-year-old is on penalty-taking duty as well as the clear talismanic figure in the striking role. A goal in the first round opener and four in League Two has seen Kabia lauded as one of the signings of the window in the fourth tier. If the striker is available for selection again, then at 37/20 this is a perfectly good punt against a very weak Wednesday lineup.
In just 13 minutes, Kabia was able to score against Shrewsbury Town in the first round, and if given a start this time, a longer stint could reward Grimsby with a goal from the 25-year-old. Wednesday will be worried about the potential striking options for Town. Charles Vernam at 13/5 makes total sense too, given his performances in the league as well as against the Red Devils.

Full Preview of the Game – Last Results and Head-to-Head
Solely in the EFL Cup, both sides have been fantastic. Grimsby won an opening round clash against Shrewsbury Town, 3-1, before pulling off the giant-killing against Manchester United. Ruben Amorim’s side were handed even more misery with a 2-2 match in normal time being followed by a clinical performance from the Mariners.
Grimsby currently sit fifth in League Two, scoring 14 goals and conceding nine times. A 3-0 victory over Crawley Town on the opening weekend was followed up by a 3-3 draw against Harrogate Town. One-goal margins saw the Mariners win against Newport County and fellow promotion hopefuls, Walsall. A mixed run of form in the fourth tier has seen draws with Accrington Stanley and Cambridge United come either side of a 1-0 loss to Bristol Rovers and an imperious 3-2 victory over MK Dons.
Sheffield Wednesday on the other hand, won against Leeds after a 3-3, penalty victory over Bolton Wanderers in the first round. Pedersen’s side are winless this season though. Just one point, in an impressive comeback against Wrexham, has been surrounded by zero point performances. Defeats to Leicester City, Stoke City, Swansea City and Bristol City have landed the Owls in an early relegation zone place, yet still above fierce rivals Sheffield United.
These two clubs faced off in last season’s EFL Cup campaign too – in the second round. The Owls won 5-1, with Callum Paterson bagging a late brace and Cameron McJannet scoring Grimsby’s only goal of the game.
