Sheffield United are currently occupying last place in the Championship, with fan concern of Rubén Sellés’ capability to manage a high-profile, second tier name. The Blades could look to gain at least a point visiting an uncharacteristic Ipswich Town side.
Sellés has seemingly abandoned his foremost philosophy of defensive solidity, with an emphasis on an attack-heavy midfield working against the Blades so far. United’s woes in the league have seen an unbalanced midfield three fail to control and dictate possession during matches – as seen under Chris Wilder. The former Blades boss was relieved of his duties at the end of an unsuccessful play-off campaign.
BBC Radio Sheffield reporter, Adam Oxley, suggested that:
“The decision to sack Wilder, arguably the most successful manager in the club’s history, was a huge gamble by the owners, and to an extent, a surprise decision as well.”
Sellés was fired by Hull City, despite navigating the Tigers through an exceptionally difficult period last season and ultimately escaping relegation. The former Reading boss needs to turn the Blades’ form around quickly if he wishes to remain a key part of the United project. A visit to the Tractor Boys will be an important opportunity for Sheffield United to stake their Championship claim as a still-present powerhouse by defeating a title favourite.
The Benefit of Facing Ipswich Early
Kieran McKenna’s side have started poorly too, with a loss to Preston North End and three draws to relatively tough opposition in: Birmingham City, Southampton, and Derby County. With that said, the conviction of these performances has been very weak. A last minute equaliser against both the Blues and Derby handed the Tractor Boys several lifelines. The Blades’ latest defensive recruits could balance the squad wonderfully, allowing for a more cohesive lineup against Ipswich.
Japhet Tanganga, lauded as easily one of the best centre-back in the league during his time at Millwall, has completed a big-money move to the Blades despite having just one year left on his contract at the Den. United have scored a dismal one goal so far in the league season. Sellés’ side haven’t scored in three successive matches, losing all three of the last Championship fixtures 1-0 has unsettled supporters. On paper, United now look imperious defensively. The Blades secured deals for Tanganga, Ben Mee and Mark McGuinness – who was signed from Luton Town on Deadline Day.
Writer’s View
Sheffield United could spring a surprise against Ipswich, despite their unsettlingly poor form. The Blades have recruited sensibly and have spent money to cover and improve worrying areas of the squad. The likes of Louie Barry, Gustavo Hamer and Callum O’Hare could gel better going forward with the defence being bolstered massively. Chiedozie Ogbene will miss out on a visit to his parent club as the 28-year-old joined on a season-long loan from Ipswich.
