Our Three Predictions for Gillingham vs Notts County

  • First Prediction: Gillingham to win – 13/10
  • Second Prediction: Over 2.5 goals to be scored – 5/1
  • Third Prediction: Matthew Dennis to score at any time – 13/5

First Prediction for Gillingham vs Notts County – Gillingham to win – 13/10

It has shocked many to see Gillingham joint-top of the league after seven games. They and Bromley are the only two sides in the division who have yet to be beaten in the league; their only loss in all competitions coming on penalties to third-tier side AFC Wimbledon in the Carabao Cup. Since then, they won four games on the spin, and picked up a point in dramatic fashion against the aforementioned Bromley last weekend after finding themselves 2-0 down. Although their opponents, Notts County, have also had a decent start to the season, they haven’t had as good a start as the Gills have, and find themselves 10th, on 11 points after seven games. Their last league defeat came almost a month ago at Barrow; however, the hosts have a 100% win rate at home, whilst Martin Paterson’s side have been inconsistent on the road. Gillingham’s surprisingly good start, mixed with the fact that they have picked up nine points from a possible nine points on home soil, makes them favourites to win this tie.

Second Prediction for Gillingham vs Notts County – Over 2.5 goals to be scored – 5/1

What both sides have proved they can do very well is find the back of the net. Despite the nine-place difference between the two sides, the away side have actually scored one more goal than their opponents, scoring 12, whilst Gillingham have scored 11. However, Notts County have conceded more goals, conceding nine goals in the fourth-tier, and a further four in two cup games, whilst Gillingham have only conceded five, and another two in two cup games. On average, both of these sides score more than one goal per game, the hosts’ record sitting at 1.57 goals scored per game, whilst Notts County’s record sits at 1.71. In terms of defending, Gareth Ainsworth’s side concede less than a goal per game, their average sitting at 0.71, whilst their opponents’ record sits at 1.29 goals per game. Although Gills have been defensively solid, the Magpies’ record in front of goal is the joint-third best in the division, with the stats for this game implying that it might be a high-scoring affair between two sides who know where the back of the net is.

Third Prediction for Gillingham vs Notts County – Matthew Dennis to score at any time – 13/5

Matthew Dennis joined the club from relegated side Carlisle United in the summer, after scoring six goals in 14 games for a struggling side who were relegated in 23rd place. So far, he’s proved he’s more than good enough to play in the fourth tier, hitting the ground running at his new club immediately, already matching the six goals he scored last season in just seven league games in black and white. He’s scored in every one of his last five games, including a brace against Bromley, meaning he’s scored six in his last five also. His record means he’s the top scorer not only at the club, but in the league also, scoring one more than Tranmere Rovers’ Omari Patrick. It’s obvious why he’s being backed to score in a sixth consecutive fixture in this clash to help his side further.

Full Preview of the Game – Last Results and Head-To-Head

As mentioned above, both sides come into this on good form, the hosts unbeaten in the league so far this season, picking up 15 of the 21 available points, which currently puts them top of the league. Last weekend, they grabbed a last-minute point in a 2-2 draw against Bromley, whilst Notts County continued their good form, winning 1-0 against Fleetwood.

Ainsworth’s side had a poor campaign last season, finishing 17th, while their opponents qualified for the play-offs. However, they lost 2-0 on aggregate to now League One side AFC Wimbledon, leaving them in search of third-tier football once again, this time under a new manager. Although it’s still early days in terms of the season, three points for either side could prove crucial, for both confidence reasons and league position reasons.

Since 2013, these sides have met eight times, in both League One and League Two. The number of games each side have won is currently tied, with Gills winning four and County winning four, none of the games ending in a draw at full time. Last time these sides met, the Magpies came away with all three points at Priestfield Stadium thanks to early goals from Nick Tsaroulla and David McGoldrick, whilst seeing out the game in the last 10 minutes after Joe Gbode got a goal back.
