Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head-To-Head:
Fleetwood Town started their campaign in positive fashion with six points from their opening two matches after victories against Barnet and Bristol Rovers. The opening day win at The Hive against Barnet saw a fine performance from goalkeeper Jay Lynch and goals from Will Davies and Elliot Bonds to take the three points and Davies followed that goal up with a brace at home to Bristol Rovers to continue the fine start to the season.
A penalty defeat to Barnsley in the Carabao Cup followed four days later before a 2-2 draw away at Bromley in League Two action. James Bolton gave The Cod Army an early lead before they fell behind and needed a 93rd minute goal from veteran striker James Norwood to take a point. Norwood was again on the scoresheet against Crewe Alexandra but it was nothing more than a consolation in a 4-1 loss.
Another experienced striker Ched Evans scored to secure a point at home to Oldham Athletic and Ryan Graydon got the only goal of the game to take three points home from Barrow. A victory in the EFL trophy via a penalty shootout was followed by a league defeat away at Notts County.
Fleetwood have scored nine goal in their seven games so far this season with Will Davies leading the scoring charts on three followed by James Norwood with two. Elliot Bonds has chipped in with two assists while the club have conceded 1.3 goals per game and have kept two clean sheets.
Walsall has enjoyed a strong start to the season after last season’s disappointment of missing out on promotion, winning five of their opening seven league matches. The campaign began with a 2-1 home success over Swindon Town thanks to goals from Evan Weir and a last gasp Connor Barrett strike. A league defeat at Gillingham and a Carabao Cup penalty loss at Stoke City preceded an away win at Barnet thanks to Barrett and Aaron Pressley and a narrow defeat at home to Grimsby Town.
The Saddlers needed a Harrison Burke strike to beat Salford City and a Charlie Lakin goal at MK Dons to put six more points on the board in League Two before securing a 3-1 away win at Shrewsbury Town in the EFL Trophy. Daniel Kanu was the scorer in Walsall’s last outing as they defeated Chesterfield 1-0 at The Pallet-Track Bescot Stadium.
Mat Sadler’s side have scored seven goals in seven games with top scorer Connor Barrett netting twice. Walsall have the best defence in the league with just four goals conceded and three clean sheets to their name.
Over the last 15 meetings, Walsall hold the better record with eights wins to Fleetwood’s five. It was the Lancashire side who enjoyed the points last season, completing a double over the promotion chasing Saddlers. October’s meeting in the Midlands produced an unexpectedly one sided victory for Fleetwood as the visitors scored six time to claim a 6-2 victory having fallen behind twice. Ronan Coughlan and Kayden Hughes both scored braces with Matty Virtue and Mark Helm completing the rout.
The return fixture in January was settled thanks to goals from Shaun Rooney and James Bolton, as Fleetwood inflicted a 2-0 defeat on Walsall who would end the season a point away from automatic promotion.
Prior to the October contest, there had been a five year gap since the last time these sides faced off against each other. The 2018-19 season saw both sides competing in League One but would end in disappointment for Walsall in the form of relegation. A 0-0 draw was played out at Highbury Stadium but it was Walsall who came out on top at the Bescot thanks to Morgan Ferrier and Dan Scarr goals.
