West Bromwich Albion In Three-Way Tussle For Ex-England International

West Bromwich Albion are set to battle it out with Championship rivals Birmingham City and Wrexham for the signature of former England international Dele Alli, according to The Mail.

The Baggies have enjoyed an excellent start to the new season under the stewardship of Ryan Mason, picking up 10 points from their opening four fixtures. They entered the international break on the back of a 1-0 win over Stoke City, a result which saw them move up to second in the table.

It’s been four years and counting since WBA were in the Premier League and a busy transfer window cemented their ambitions of returning to the top tier. Seven figure sums were splashed out on the likes of Aune Heggebo, Nat Phillips, Alfie Gilchrist and George Campbell, although it appears as if there could be further additions to the squad.

Alli Set For Championship Move

Alli has had to contend with a number of off-field issues in recent years which has left his career in doubt. After departing Everton in 2024, he eventually made the move to Italy with Como in January. However, he made just one appearance for the Serie A outfit and was sent off just 10 minutes into his debut.

The former Tottenham Hotspur star was released last week after it was announced that his contract had been cancelled by mutual agreement. It now appears as if a move to the Championship is on the cards, with three clubs reportedly in the hunt.

The winger started his career at MK Dons in League One before earning a transfer to Spurs. He was widely regarded as one of the hottest young prospects in English football and went on to earn 37 caps at international level, including England’s run to the 2018 World Cup semi final.

West Brom reportedly face competition from city rivals Birmingham, as well as Hollywood-backed Wrexham.

Writer’s View

There is no doubting Dele Alli’s ability and at just 29-years-old, he will still feel that he can rediscover that spark. It’s no surprise that clubs expected to be challenging for promotion from the Championship are sniffing around and it could be a big signing for West Brom. The winger knows Ryan Mason from his time with Tottenham and the young manager could be the ideal person to take him under his wing. However, the financial clout of both Birmingham and Wrexham could play a huge role in this saga.
