Sheffield Wednesday are a club already ravaged by injuries, contract terminations, off-the-pitch financial problems and transfers away. Bailey Cadamarteri is the latest being poised for a move away from Hillsborough.
EFL clubs seemingly have no mercy when it comes to transfer business. Wednesday have seen their transfer embargo mostly lifted, but will still struggle to retain key assets as they head into Deadline Day. Cadamarteri has been an important player so far this season, as the Owls struggle to field a full matchday squad at times. The former Lincoln City loanee is now being linked with several Championship outfits.
Preston North End, Sheffield United, Blackburn Rovers and Ipswich Town have all been reported as interested parties. At 20 years old, Cadamarteri has already seen a decent exposure to EFL football. In Wednesday’s 2023/24 campaign, the former England under-20 representative featured 25 times over Championship and FA Cup involvement. Five goals were scored during that season, with a move to Lincoln being green-lit the following year.
In just 23 League One matches, Cadamarteri scored five times and on three occasions in the EFL Trophy. Seemingly, the Owls aren’t the only club to have picked up on this promising talent as Championship rivals – including fierce, local one, Sheffield United – are circling for his signature.
Sheffield Wednesday currently cannot register new players, as the EFL restrictions are still mostly in-place. But rumours of a deal for Manchester City’s Jaden Heskey may only be sanctioned if a quick decision happens before the closure on Deadline Day.

Financially this could massively benefit Wednesday, but they will be losing one of their few sellable assets at a time when he is needed the most. The Owls have been placed in a tremendously difficult position due to Dejphon Chansiri’s diabolical mismanagement of the club.
The likelihood is that the 20-year-old could demand a decent fee for Sheffield Wednesday, but it will not be enough to allow the club to find a replacement this quickly. Furthermore, due to their transfer restrictions, a loan or free deal wouldn’t be able to recoup what Cadamarteri can offer.
The Blades and Ipswich could offer Cadamarteri a more long-term future, with neither sides likely to start him up front immediately. It would merely be a squad depth move if the 20-year-old were to join either. Blackburn could offer the striker an important role, but have recently unveiled Andri Gudjohnsen as their latest purchase. North End are on the search for another striker due to their many injuries, so the Lancashire side can offer the highest playing time.
