Bolton Wanderers have unveiled Marcus Forss as their latest addition ahead of an important promotion-ambitious season in League One. This Deadline Day loan deal could be a perfect continuation of a promising league start.
Steven Schumacher’s side are currently sitting in 14th place, but performances suggest that a turnaround in fortune is on the cards. Exceptional performances from Amario Cozier-Duberry have shown that Bolton can get it right in the loan market. Middlesbrough are allowing Forss to develop elsewhere as Wanderers have snapped the 26-year-old up.
Mason Burstow will provide competition to Forss as the loanee has scored three times so far this season. A summer pick-up of Ethan Erhahon from Lincoln City and another loan signing of Ibrahim Cissoko has completely bolstered Schumacher’s lineup.
Since arriving at the Riverside in July 2022, Forss has featured 92 times for Boro and scored 18 goals. The 26-year-old will be looking to re-discover his goalscoring form at Bolton as he has only scored once since the end of the 2023/24 campaign. During a promising career at Brentford, the former Championship specialist scored 19 goals either side of a loan move to AFC Wimbledon.
Forss had this to say on his latest career switch:
“I’ve scored twice here with Wimbledon and I’m delighted to be here and get it all started and get going.
“I did have a look [at the fixtures] when I signed and I did have a chuckle to myself because I have really good memories there and I have good memories of the club, so it’ll be nice to see them as well.
“League One is a different kind of league and it’s probably more physical. But I’ve been there and done it and experienced it and now I’m just looking forward to getting back out there.”

Forss’ loan move to Wimbledon allowed him to find his form again when playing for Brentford. 11 goals in 19 games at a lower level meant that the former Finland international could return to the Bees and continue developing well. In order to break into the national team again, Bolton will need to be the perfect place for Forss to perform.
Surrounded by attack-minded loan players and a strong midfield selection, Forss will not only help Bolton with their play-off push, but help Schumacher achieve his attacking approach at Bolton. Play-offs should be seen as the bare minimum for a side this strong and Forss can be expected to combine well with the likes of Cozier-Duberry and Cissoko.
