Grimsby Town play host to Bristol Rovers as both sides return to Sky Bet League Two action on Saturday afternoon at Blundell Park.
Our Three Predictions for Grimsby Town vs Bristol Rovers
- First Prediction: Grimsby Town to win – 9/10
- Second Prediction: Over 2.5 goals to be scored – 17/20
- Third Prediction: Jaze Kabia to score at any time – 3/2

First Prediction for Grimsby Town vs Bristol Rovers – Grimsby Town to win – 9/10
David Artell’s Grimsby Town side are unbeaten in all competitions this season so far, and come into this game on the back of a penalty shoot-out win against Manchester United midweek. After narrowly missing out on play-off football on the final day of League Two last season, the Mariners will be looking to emulate last season’s success, and that is exactly what the side are doing so far. Sitting fourth, the side have beaten the likes of Crawley Town, who were relegated alongside Bristol Rovers last season, as well as Walsall and Newport. Although the hosts have started well this season, the opposite can be said for the away side, who have struggled on their return to the fourth tier and currently sit 20th, having registered one win and one draw in their five games this season. Grimsby’s form coming into this game is better than their opponents by far, and the side will be feeling on top of the world after pulling off one of the greatest cup upsets in football history. Whilst the away side haven’t started as well as they would’ve liked, they’ll still have ambitions of fighting for promotion back to League One this season, but if the hosts are serious about their promotion fight, they need to beat these sorts of opponents if they want to achieve that.
Second Prediction for Grimsby Town vs Bristol Rovers – Over 2.5 goals to be scored – 17/20
One thing that both sides have proved they can do this season is find the back of the net. Whilst Darrell Clarke’s side haven’t scored as many goals as their opponents in the league, they were able to net four goals in a crazy eight-goal thriller midweek in the EFL Trophy, after finding themselves on the back foot against Tottenham Hotspur U21’s early on. The Mariners have scored 10 league goals in five games, whilst also scoring a further five over the two Carabao Cup games. However, the Gas have really struggled defensively so far this season, conceding 13 goals in seven games, four of which also came midweek at the Mem. Keeping only two clean sheets, the backline, who are mostly made up of defenders who have joined this transfer window, are still settling down and learning to work together. Grimsby have also only kept two clean sheets in all competitions, but have let in fewer goals, conceding eight. Whilst neither side have an awful record when it comes to conceding goals, alongside the fact that neither side struggles with scoring them, the stats suggest that this could be a relatively high scoring game which features over 2.5 goals scored.
Third Prediction for Grimsby Town vs Bristol Rovers – Jaze Kabia to score at any time – 3/2
Jaze Kabia moved to Blundell Park from non-league side Truro City this summer, and has already racked up four goals in seven games as a Grimsby man. With three of the four goals coming in the league, he is currently his side’s top scorer, as well as the second joint top scorer in the division, and will no doubt be looking to further his tally and help his side pick up all three points to continue their momentum against a Rovers side who can be vulnerable defensively.

Full Preview of the Game – Last Results and Head-To-Head
As mentioned above, the hosts come into this game on better form than their opponents, currently unbeaten this season, not losing a game in either the league or the cup. Their opponents, however, have struggled back in the fourth tier, winning just one game in League Two so far.
Both sides, despite Bristol Rovers’ poor start, will be looking to earn promotion to League One, with Grimsby missing out narrowly on play-off football by two places and two points last season, whilst the Gas suffered relegation from the third tier.
This is the first EFL meeting between these sides in 18 years, with the sides only meeting in the National League three times during the 2014/15 season since 2010. In the three games, the away side won two games, whilst the other game ended level at full-time. The latest of these three clashes came in the National League play-off final, which Bristol Rovers dramatically won on penalties after the game finished 1-1 under returning manager Darrell Clark. The Mariners took an early lead through Lenell John-Lewis, before Ellis Harrison, who is now back at the Memorial Stadium, levelled the score on the half-hour mark.
