Exeter City Boss Reveals Transfer Plans

Exeter City manager Gary Caldwell has revealed he is still looking to add to his squad before the transfer window closes next week.

The Grecians have endured an inconsistent start to the new campaign, thanks in part to the number of new arrivals at St James’ Park. As many as nine new faces have entered through the door this summer, which has led to both excellent and frustrating performances in equal measure.

After losing on the opening day against newly promoted Doncaster Rovers, they swept aside Blackpool in emphatic fashion. However, that was followed by a disappointing 2-1 home defeat against Mansfield Town.

The Devon-based side looked to have turned a corner when they beat Wycombe Wanderers on the road, but their last outing saw them beaten 2-0 by struggling Northampton Town. Caldwell will be looking to return to winning ways this weekend when his side host Peterborough United.

Caldwell Targeting More Signings

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s clash, the manager admitted that his team are still finding their feet:

“We’re a new team that’s been put together so there’s going to be some parts of our game we have to keep improving.

“We’re early in the season and we know that we’re way off the finished article. I think the good thing we have is a group of players that are willing, want to take information, want to train well and then take that into the game on Saturday.

“We want to get a better consistency to our performances and with that, hopefully more points come.”

The summer transfer window slams shut on Monday night, with Caldwell revealing he is still hoping to add players to his squad:

“I think everyone knows speed kills. It gives a second thought of how they’re going to do that because you can play a different way and get one on one threat.

“We have some of that in the team, but I think we want more of that and more options to do that higher up the pitch. I’m sure we’ll get something in before the end of the window.”

Writer’s View

Exeter’s early form is typical of a side that has undergone much upheaval in the close season. Still, they have shown glimpses that they will still be a force to be reckoned with in League One and it is unlikely they will ever be in any danger. Caldwell will still be hoping that he can achieve a top half finish, which would be an improvement on last season. Of course, that depends on who comes through the door and how quickly the squad can gel in the coming weeks.
