Swindon Town are closing in on the signing of experienced Wycombe Wanderers defender Ryan Tafazolli.
The 33-year-old centre-back was at the County Ground at the weekend and could be unveiled as one of Ian Holloway’s first major additions in the coming days.
Town Target Defensive Reinforcement
Tafazolli underwent medical checks on Saturday before Swindon’s 2-1 victory against Shrewsbury Town, with only the final details of the deal left to resolve. Discussions are ongoing over whether he will join on a free transfer or on loan, but the expectation is that an agreement will be struck early this week.
Holloway has made no secret of his desire to add a physically dominant defender to his squad, particularly after his side conceded eight goals already this season, six of which have come from set pieces. Standing at 6ft 5in, Tafazolli is seen as an ideal candidate to add aerial strength and leadership to a youthful backline.
Swindon’s need for experience at the back was highlighted against Shrewsbury, where Tom Wilson-Brown and Filzofe Mabete, who have fewer than ten league appearances combined, started alongside each other. The absence of James Ball, who is out for two months with a knee injury, has further reduced defensive options.

Experienced Campaigner
Tafazolli brings with him more than 300 career appearances across League Two, League One and the Championship. He came through the ranks at Southampton before establishing himself at Mansfield Town and later impressing with Peterborough United. His performances earned him a move to Hull City in 2019, and he went on to become a key figure at Wycombe Wanderers, where he has made over 100 appearances.
Although phased out at Adams Park last season, Tafazolli broadened his horizons with a loan spell at Lee Man in the Hong Kong Premier League. Now he looks set to return to Wiltshire, having spent time at Salisbury City earlier in his career.
Away from the pitch, he has built a sizeable following of over 100,000 on TikTok, where he shares insights into life as a professional footballer.
Holloway, however, remained cautious when discussing transfer business, saying:
“I would rather talk about that when I definitely know that it is happening. You should never count your chickens before they hatch. I want to wait and get somebody if I can, and I do not know if that is happening yet.”
Writer’s View
This potential deal makes a lot of sense for Swindon. Tafazolli offers proven quality, aerial dominance and the kind of know-how that Holloway’s side badly needs after a shaky start defensively. With a youthful backline and Ball sidelined, his presence could be transformative both on the pitch and in the dressing room. If Swindon finalise the move quickly, they will have addressed one of their most pressing issues before the transfer deadline.
