Our Three Predictions For Norwich City vs Southampton

  • First Prediction: Southampton To Win – 5/4
  • Second Prediction: Both Teams To Score – 29/50
  • Third Prediction: Over 2.5 Goals – 7/10

First Prediction For Norwich City vs Southampton – Southampton To Win – 5/4

It’s been an inconsistent start for Norwich, who are still getting used to Liam Manning’s style of play since his appointment in the summer. They are yet to pick up a victory at Carrow Road this season, having lost 2-1 in both their home fixtures to Millwall and Middlesbrough. The Canaries do have two wins to their name in all competitions, although both have come on the road. They beat Watford in the first round of the Carabao Cup before an impressive 2-1 victory over Portsmouth at Fratton Park. Still, their form in East Anglia is a concern.

Southampton have also endured a tricky start to the campaign, winning one, drawing one and losing one of their opening three Championship fixtures. It took a late comeback to pick up three points against Wrexham on the opening day before picking up a point at fellow relegated side Ipswich Town at Portman Road. Their most recent outing was a disappointment, when they lost 2-1 to 10 men Stoke City at St Mary’s on Saturday. A much-changed side did beat League One’s Northampton Town in the first round of the Carabao Cup earlier this month and although the Saints are expected to rotate again, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them edge this contest.

Second Prediction For Norwich City vs Southampton – Both Teams To Score – 29/50

Norwich’s four fixtures in all competitions this season have all finished 2-1. This has seen them win two and lose two, but there is no denying their threat in front of goal. Josh Sargent is always capable of finding the back of the net and although speculation continues over his future, the American is likely to start here. Still, Liam Manning will be concerned with just how many goals they are conceding at the moment and Southampton have enough firepower to breach the Canaries back line.

Similar to Norwich, the Saints have also been consistent in this market so far this season. All three of their league games have seen both teams score and changes across the defensive line could make this an open encounter. Southampton have kept just one clean sheet all season, which came in the first round of this competition in a 1-0 win over Northampton Town. The Canaries offer a much bigger threat though and will be expected to give their supporters something to cheer about after two poor home games thus far.

Third Prediction For Norwich City vs Southampton – Over 2.5 Goals – 7/10

Norwich boast a 100% record in this market in their four outings this season. We’ve already documented how the Canaries seem to love a 2-1 result and all signs indicate we could be in for a repeat here. Two 2-1 defeats in front of their own supporters isn’t ideal and Liam Manning will be desperate to put that right here, especially as they are not due to play at Carrow Road again until they welcome Wrexham on September 20th.

Southampton are expected to heavily rotate which will lead to a more open game, but they still possess enough quality to take the game to the hosts. Two of their four fixtures in all competitions have produced three or more goals, but a 1-0 win over Northampton in the previous round can be discounted somewhat. No disrespect to the Cobblers, but they don’t offer the same threat as Norwich going forward and the Saints will likely have to score at least twice to secure a passage into the third round.

Full Preview of the Game: Last Results and Head-To-Head

It’s been a tough start for Norwich, who began their campaign with a 2-1 home defeat against Millwall. Liam Manning will feel his side did enough to earn something from that game, especially as they followed that with back-to-back 2-1 wins over Watford in the Carabao Cup first round and Portsmouth in the Championship. However, they failed to build on that momentum last weekend when they fell to a 2-1 defeat against Middlesbrough. Their cause wasn’t helped though when midfielder Jacob Wright was dismissed just before the hour mark. Aside from their results, Josh Sargent has shown just how important he is to this team by scoring in all four of the Canaries’ outings so far this season.

Southampton put their Premier League nightmare behind them on the opening day when they came from behind to beat newly promoted Wrexham with two late goals. Will Still’s side followed that by beating Northampton Town 1-0 in the Carabao Cup first round before travelling to Ipswich Town. Like the Saints, Ipswich are expected to challenge for promotion and it was no surprise to see the sides play out a 1-1 draw at Portman Road. They hosted Stoke City on Saturday aiming to return to winning ways but suffered a shock when the Potters left St Mary’s with all three points. The result was perhaps a bigger shock due to Staffordshire-based outfit playing the last 30 minutes with 10 men.

This is the first meeting between the pair since New Year’s Day 2024, when the two sides played out a 1-1 draw at Carrow Road. Both clashes that season finished level, with a staggering 4-4 encounter played out at St Mary’s. The last cup meeting came in the FA Cup in 2017, which Southampton edged 1-0 in a third round meeting after a 2-2 draw was played out in East Anglia. The last time they met in the League Cup was in 1973, with Norwich winning 2-0 at The Dell. Overall, it’s the Saints who possess the upper hand in this fixture, winning 52 of the previous 133 meetings. Norwich hold 41 victories whilst there has been 40 draws.
