Swansea City have strengthened their squad yet again with the latest addition being unveiled today. Out-of-favour Nottingham Forest midfielder, Marko Stamenic, has completed a move to the Swans – with a deal said to be worth more than £2 million.
An impressive summer recruitment strategy has revived Swansea’s hopes for the upcoming Championship season. Key additions have already emerged as fine assets in the early moments of the campaign. The second tier side’s latest purchase of Stamenic takes the total of incomings up to nine.
The New Zealand international did not feature for Forest during his year-long stay with the Premier League team. Instead, Stamenic was loaned out to Olympiakos to develop with the dual-owned side. 23 appearances later, the midfielder has now been allowed to leave the club permanently with a move materialising with Swansea.
Stamenic has played for a wealth of clubs prior to his latest career move. Team Wellington berthed the 23-year-old’s path, with an involvement in the under-17 national side up to the first team being subsequent. FC København then purchased the midfielder in November 2020 and offered him 23 appearances, with a 2021/22 temporary spell with HB Køge seeing Stamenic appear a further 23 times. As for FK Crvena Zvezda (Red Star Belgrade), the Serbian side handed the new Swansea addition 35 matches to impress before a move to Forest in 2024.
Alan Sheehan, Swansea’s now-head coach, offered his reasoning behind the Welsh side’s latest purchase and what it means for the squad:
“Marko is an excellent player, one who has been on our radar for some time, and he will bring us different attributes in our midfield with his physicality and athleticism.
“He was clear in his desire to be part of what we are building at Swansea City and we believe his character will make him a really good fit for this group.
“We want to be an adaptable team that is on the front foot with and without the ball at all times, and Marko will help us to do that.”
To bolster their squad depth, the Swans have completed deals for: Paul Farman, Ricardo Santos and Bobby Wales – with the 20-year-old looking to be a promising talent. Ethan Galbraith has already joined from Leyton Orient after an impressive League One season; Zeidane Inoussa moved to Swansea in a deal worth over £5 million. Cameron Burgess has arrived as a direct replacement for Harry Darling despite being fairly older than the new Norwich City centre-back. Kaelan Casey joined temporarily on a season-long deal from West Ham United, with Malick Yalcouyé’s loan acquisition being by far the most impressive coup.
Writer’s View
Swansea look exceptionally well-prepared as they mount a new threat to the Championship. With quality Premier League loan additions, as well as smart pick-ups for cut-price fees, the Swans could have an underrated second tier campaign.
Stamenic will bring quality to the midfield, which is already being tipped to work beautifully. If the balance of Melker Widell, Stamenic and Yalcouyé can be found with pre-existing assets like Goncalo Franco still performing, Sheehan’s side could have a great campaign.
