Gillingham Boss Makes Transfer Admission After Injuries

Gillingham manager Gareth Ainsworth says he wants two more signings before the summer transfer window closes.

The call comes after a 1–1 draw at Tranmere Rovers left the Gills short in defence, with Conor Masterson and Shad Ogie both sidelined.

Ainsworth confirmed he prefers a lean group, but injuries have pushed recruitment up the agenda. While defensive cover is the obvious need, he indicated other areas are under review as he weighs late-window options with owners Brad and Shannon Galinson and the club’s recruitment staff.

Ainsworth Eyes Two Additions

The head coach laid out the situation following the weekend’s draw, acknowledging that absences have stretched resources and increased the urgency to act. He reiterated confidence in his core squad, yet accepted that two targeted arrivals would help balance the group ahead of a busy run of fixtures.

“Shad hopefully won’t be too long. But Conor’s probably a bit longer, which is a worry. We may have to go into the market for a couple more players, which I’ll speak to Brad and Shannon (Galinson) about and the recruitment guys. Hopefully, we can bolster the ranks because I do like a small squad, but when you lose some long-term, it’s tough.”

“I’ll look at the whole squad. I believe that there’s some additions to be made in some key positions, which will bolster us. I’m not going to say it on the media, but I’m hoping, as I always said, one to add. There’s probably going to be two to add now.”

Injuries Force a Rethink

Masterson’s absence has been a particular blow after a positive start to the campaign, while Ogie’s issue further limits options across the back line. The draw at Prenton Park nevertheless extended an unbeaten start, and a disciplined defensive display for long spells offered encouragement as Ainsworth considers short-term cover and longer-term competition.

Beyond centre-back, the staff are assessing roles where depth could be improved, with an emphasis on players who complement the current group rather than disrupt the balance. Any arrivals are expected to fit the manager’s intensity and adaptability, adding flexibility across positions without bloating the squad.

What Happens Next

Gillingham are expected to work quickly, sounding out availability and affordability in the final fortnight of the window. The club will prioritise character and readiness to contribute, with loans and low-risk permanent deals the most likely routes. Ainsworth’s preference for a tight-knit squad means additions will be selective, focused on immediate needs and the capacity to raise standards in training and on matchdays.

Writer’s View

The message is clear: Gillingham do not want to drift through the last weeks of the window under-resourced, and injuries have accelerated plans. Two signings feels the right number, provided they bring reliability as well as versatility.

Cover at centre-back is the headline, but a second addition that improves the team’s athleticism or set-piece reliability would be smart business. With the early-season platform intact, decisive work now would protect the small-squad model Ainsworth favours while preserving momentum into the autumn.
