Hull City, who had been facing financial troubles over failure to pay past transfer fees, have now put all that focus behind them and kicked on with an opening weekend draw with Coventry City. Oxford United will be targeting another comfortable campaign away from relegation, but stumbled over the first hurdle with a 1-0 defeat to Portsmouth.

First Prediction for Hull City vs Oxford United – Under 2.5 goals 29/50
Despite a 3-3 draw with Wrexham in an exhilarating EFL Cup tie, the Tigers began their season with an opening weekend stalemate with Coventry. This 0-0 draw saw a defensively solid showing from both Championship sides. Hull pride themselves on boasting a strong back line, with Charlie Hughes as their important leader at centre-back.
Oxford United won’t be as worried this season facing a Hull attack. With their impressive loan options now gone, the Tigers only mustered seven shots against the Sky Blues. United’s best asset is their defence. Michal Helik is a phenomenal centre-back at second tier level and Gary Rowett notoriously adopts a defence-first approach. Brodie Spencer’s arrival from Huddersfield Town has also helped their cause.
With the London-based side’s opening two domestic games consisting of one goal in each, a 1-0 win against Colchester United followed the narrow defeat against Pompey. Unfortunately for Oxford United, a reinforcement in attack is needed despite their imperious defensive unit.
Second Prediction for Hull City vs Oxford United – Michal Helik to score anytime 129/10
Helik is an important asset both offensively and at the back of Oxford United’s squad. The former Terriers defender scored three times in the last nine Championship games of the 2024/25 season. At 129/10, this bet is incredible value as last campaign, during a half-season introduction, Helik scored once every four games on average. Five goals in 20 matches saw the centre-back provide crucial attacking threat for Rowett’s inherited side.
With United’s ambition for winning corner kicks, Helik will be a great shout to notch a goal against a Hull side that may struggle in an aerial battle. If based on the same average as last year, the centre-back is due a goal in the next two matches, seeing as Helik hasn’t bagged yet in two appearances domestically.
Third Prediction for Hull City vs Oxford United – Corner match bet – Oxford United 5/2
Considering this ability to play for corners, Oxford United will likely use that to their strength when attacking. Hull have had the lesser tally of corner kicks in their first two games this season, with Coventry achieving eight to the Tigers’ two. The same happened in the EFL Cup, where Wrexham beat Hull’s tally by two.
Rowett’s side can utilise this imbalance in set pieces by targeting that area of play. With their power in aerial duels and Helik’s notoriety around that sort of threat, this could easily land. Against Colchester United, Oxford hit the eight mark as well as in their opening weekend game in the Championship. Portsmouth only mustered four corners.

Hull were knocked out of the Carabao Cup this week, with Wrexham defeating the Tigers in an excellent comeback penalty win. A question of their morale will be asked by Oxford United, with Ollie Palmer’s late brace being in the forefront of Hull’s mind. Sergej Jakirovic will want his side to replicate the resolute performance shown against Coventry in their league opener, while looking to go one step further to grab all three points.
Rowett’s side lost 1-0 to an Adam Segecic goal in a Portsmouth battle on the opening weekend. A 1-0 victory against Colchester United will have revived some hopes for United, but a tough test against Hull will require a great performance away from home. With opposite pre-season fortunes, Hull looked the stronger heading into the season but the Championship always throws up surprises.
With the two sides rarely meeting in recent history, last season’s exchange of three points each saw both sides win at home. In a 2-1 Hull victory in March, Gustavo Puerta scored in the 76th minute during a quick Tigers comeback, before seeing red in the final moments. Since July 2017, one draw, two City wins and two Oxford United triumphs could see either team win tomorrow.
