Oldham Athletic Swoop For Former Lincoln City Defender

Jamie Robson is set to bring his time at Forest Green Rovers to an end with a move to League Two side Oldham Athletic nearing completion.

The 27-year-old, who starred in a struggling side last season, is expected to become the first senior departure of the Robbie Savage era at The New Lawn.

Forest Green Stalwart Edges Closer to Departure

Robson played every single National League match during the 2024/25 season and was rewarded for his consistency with both the Supporters’ and Players’ Player of the Year awards. His form, however, was not enough to helpRovers to promotion, prompting a summer of overhaul under new manager Savage, who replaced Steve Cotterill after relegation.

The Scot, who joined Forest Green from Lincoln City in 2023, made 122 appearances across all competitions during his two-and-a-half-year stay. Prior to his move south of the border, he played top-flight football in the Scottish Premiership and had a spell with Lincoln City in League One, adding to his experience in the English pyramid.

Latics Ambition

Robson’s impending move to Oldham represents a strong statement of intent by the Latics, who were held to a goalless draw by MK Dons on the opening day before exiting the Carabao Cup in midweek. His arrival will bring significant EFL pedigree to the left-hand side of their defence as they look to mount a promotion push from the National League at the third time of asking.

Forest Green have already filled the void, signing Neil Kengni from Macclesfield earlier in the summer, with Savage continuing to put his stamp on the squad. The club made their 11th addition of the window earlier this week, bringing in midfielder Nick Haughton from AFC Fylde.

Savage has also made it clear that outgoings will follow as part of the reshuffle, with experienced campaigner Liam Sercombe already informed he is free to leave.

For Robson, the move to Boundary Park marks a new chapter in a career that has seen steady progress across both Scottish and English football. His leadership and durability will be key assets for Oldham boss Micky Mellon, who is seeking greater defensive solidity this season after last year’s inconsistencies.

Writer’s View

This is a good deal for all parties. Forest Green get to accelerate their rebuild with a younger alternative already signed in Neil Kengni, while Oldham pick up a dependable, high-character professional with over 100 EFL games under his belt. Robson’s consistency, fitness and experience will give the Latics a serious boost in a division where those qualities are often the difference between mid-table obscurity and play-off contention.

With Rovers clearly making space for more additions, don’t be surprised if Robson’s exit is just the start of a busy August at The New Lawn.
