Gillingham vs Walsall: Prediction, Lineups & Odds (09/08)

Gillingham host Walsall in the second 2025/26 League Two matchday at Priestfield Stadium on Saturday.Β

Our Three Predictions for Gillingham vs Walsall

  • First Prediction: Walsall to win – 3/2
  • Second Prediction: Both teams to score – 4/5
  • Third Prediction: Aaron Pressley to score at any time – 11/4

First Prediction for Gillingham vs Walsall – Walsall to win – 3/2

Despite last season’s disaster towards the end of the season, Walsall will be hoping to rectify their mistakes and emulate what they did not manage to achieve. They’ve lost a lot of key players, but they did start their season off positively with a 2-1 win with 10 men against a strong Swindon Town side last weekend, which they will hope they can carry forward. Their hosts, Gillingham, didn’t lose on the opening day, but drew away at Accrington Stanley, who are tipped to struggle in the fourth tier this season. The Gills didn’t have a great pre-season, winning one of their last five games. On top of this, last season, the Sadlers had the fourth-best away form in the division, whilst Ainsworth’s side had the 11th-worst home form. Walsall’s strong start, alongside Gillingham’s slow start, may mean Walsall make it two in two from their opening games.Β

Second Prediction for Gillingham vs Walsall – Both teams to score – 4/5

Both sides have already broken their goalscoring duck in the opening games, with the hosts scoring once against Accrington, and Walsall scoring twice against Swindon, one of which came late on with 10 men. Both sides also conceded a goal apiece, and at this stage of the season, there’s no doubt that teams are still working hard to improve, and you wouldn’t expect any team to be defensively solid after just one game. Last season, Mat Sadler’s side were the highest-scoring side in League Two, and with a successful opening day win at home, it looks like that may continue. Gill’s record wasn’t as good last campaign, but they have still opened their account for the season, even if it was an own goal that did so. It’s clear to see why you’d expect both sides to score in this game.Β

Third Prediction for Gillingham vs Walsall – Aaron Pressley to score at any time – 11/4

Despite a modest goal-scoring record over his career, striker Aaron Pressley may have found the fresh start he needed at Walsall. The 23-year-old has impressed in pre-season, scoring three goals in four games, which should boost his confidence ahead of the League Two campaign. He also ended last season in strong form, netting three goals in his final three appearances while on loan at Barrow. With Walsall reportedly paying a significant fee to secure his services, the club will be hoping he can make an almost immediate impact in Saturday’s game against the Gills.

The away side didn’t have a great end to their 2024/25 campaign, missing out on both automatic promotion and promotion via the play-offs, despite being 15 points clear at Christmas. Gillingham were the opposite, as there was nothing special to shout about from their campaign, and they did manage to get through three managers in just a single season.Β

Both sides will be hoping to improve on last season, Walsall no doubt aiming for promotion, whilst Gillingham will be looking up with manager Ainsworth, an experienced manager in the EFL who will be looking to work wonders in Kent.Β

Since 2013, these sides have met a total of 18 times, in both the third and the fourth tier. Whilst the overwhelming majority of the games have ended in draws, with 10 ending level, Gillingham have won just two, whilst Walsall have won six. The most recent matchup between the two sides ended in a 0-0 draw at Priestfields last season, in March.Β
