First Prediction for Southampton vs Wrexham – Southampton to win 13/20

Despite a dismal, and near record-breaking, poor Premier League campaign, Southampton have acted quickly to retain assets and improve their managerial hierarchy. The appointment of Will Still, a 32-year-old, effervescent manager with vast experience domestically as well as abroad, will definitely boost the Saints’ likelihood of an immediate return. Wrexham will be optimistic heading into this tie, but may see their match-up with a promotion candidate come too early in the season to offer a huge fight.

The quality in the Red Dragons’ squad has obviously heightened, with the signings of Ryan Hardie, Libertato Cacace – who could be a real coup, Lewis O’Brien, Josh Windass, Danny Ward, Kieffer Moore, Conor Coady and George Thomason. However, the Saints haven’t seen many of their talented, sellable assets leave the club despite relegation. In fact, the outgoings of Kamaldeen Sulemana and Samuel Amo-Ameyaw – the latter of which vacated the club on loan last season – have funded excellent additions in Damion Downs and Joshua Quarshie.

Southampton will boast a stronger team on paper than Wrexham, with Premier League experience and a real determination under a motivator like Still. The Saints look likely to pull off a victory this weekend, with a more familiar squad resulting a potential scoreline of 2-1.

Second Prediction for Southampton vs Wrexham – Both teams to score – Yes 3/4

As far as attacking threat at Championship level goes, both sides will look to be on the front foot for a large portion of the game. Phil Parkinson has yet to face a challenge in which Wrexham have been tactically forced on the back foot, so a clash in styles may result in a high-scoring game. The previous three seasons have seen the Welsh outfit employ players at the top end of each respective league, with a clear game plan of progressing up the pitch as quickly as possible.

Despite the undoubted quality of both teams, Wrexham in particular will need to learn how to soak up pressure on the counter, which may well be Parkinson’s early vision prior to this season. However, with Southampton displaying this domination previously at Championship level, it could be a very open game on the attacking front. Downs and Cameron Archer could both be opted for in Still’s first competitive game with the Saints. Both strikers will provide an abundant attacking threat, with Adam Armstrong potentially completed a trio of number nines due to injury absences.

The Red Dragons invested heavily in the attack this summer, with even more names likely to come through the door. A reported £10 million has been reserved solely for the striker role, with Ryan Reynolds and Rob McIlhenney’s transformed side searching for another marquee attacker. The pre-existing quality of Windass, Moore and Hardie will be enough to grab a goal in a match as difficult as this. With the potential of an in-form striker like Sam Smith being an option from the bench, Wrexham could damage the Saints as equally as vice versa.

Third Prediction for Southampton vs Wrexham – Cameron Archer to score anytime 91/50

In terms of outliers in candidates for the Championship top goalscorer this season, Cameron Archer is currently the favourite. The former Preston North End loanee is a talented striker with explosive pace and a keen eye for goal even in tight angles. This was exemplified during his loan spell with the Lilywhites as well as Middlesbrough; the 23-year-old scored 18 times in 42 Championship appearances over those two loaned-out years.

Archer was shipped off to Sheffield United despite his clearly indicated promise in front of goal. Aston Villa, as the English striker’s parent club, saw an opportunity for further profit after a decent 2023/24 season, ultimately triggering a buy-back clause with the Blades before allowing Archer to join Southampton permanently for a larger fee.

The Saints were poor in their returning Premier League campaign last season, but Archer could have been noted as a bright spark during a few matches. Dropping down a division – having scored twice in the top flight – will allow the former England under-21 to thrive under Still. Wrexham could easily be the first victim to fail in handling the all-roundedness of Archer’s game.

Full Preview of the Game – Last Results and Head-To-Head

This will be the first time in both clubs’ recent history that the two sides face off against each other. The track record between the two teams cannot be directly applied in anticipation of this game: 1979 was the last time a Southampton vs Wrexham match occurred. Spanning from 1958-79, the Saints won four out of seven head-to-heads, ranging from FA Cup clashes to Division Three meetings.

The Welsh side have completed their Oceanian tour, with mixed results indicating some concern of early team incohesion. However, as with many managers, pre-season matches are simply indicative of fitness levels and testing out systems. A 3-0 victory against Melbourne Victory sparked life into their friendly season, but a 2-1 loss to Sydney FC was shortly followed by a narrow 1-0 defeat to Wellington Phoenix.

Southampton have impressed in some of Still’s openers, narrowly beating Eastleigh and Valenciennes. The Saints also went toe-to-toe with Brighton and Hove Albion in a 2-2 stalemate, but suffered a defeat to Espanyol in the game prior. The camp will remain optimistic as the Hampshire side await Wrexham’s arrival on Saturday.
