Leicester City Urged To Seal ‘Real Coup’

Leicester City have been urged to seal a deal for former Burnley captain Josh Brownhill following reports that the Foxes have stepped up their interest in the midfielder.

The 29-year-old joined the Clarets in January 2020 from Bristol City for a fee of around £9 million. He fast became an ever-present at Turf Moor, racking up 211 appearances in all competitions.

Brownhill played a starring role for Burnley last season, helping secure a second promotion from the Championship. However, he emerged as one of the best players in the second tier, hitting a staggering 18 goals from the centre of midfield.

With Scott Parker’s team set to return to the Premier League, they were keen to retain the services of their captain. Despite contract negotiations taking place, the former Preston North End man announced his departure earlier this week.

Leicester Table Offer But Face Stiff Competition

Leicester and Burnley have switched places ahead of the coming season, whilst there has also been a change in the dugout. Marti Cifuentes has replaced Ruud van Nistelrooy, with the ex-Queens Park Rangers man keen to land Brownhill.

It was claimed yesterday that a contract offer has been made, although the playmaker would prefer a move to Leeds United. Despite that, Sky Sports pundit Lee Hendrie has urged the East Midlands-based outfit to go all out to land the player. Speaking to Football League Worldhe said:

“I think Josh Brownhill would be a fantastic signing for Leicester. I think you just have to look at the numbers that he put up in the Championship and it does speak volumes.

“I think when a top club is sort of sniffing around, you know the calibre of player that you’re bringing in.

“Josh is a strong leader as well, and you’d think it’s a massive signing for them.

“I think on the whole, where they’re at during this moment in time, losing a few big players, you need someone who’s going to come in and be a bit of a leader in the dressing room.

“With players like Jamie Vardy and Conor Coady leaving the club, it’s important to replace that. I think this would be a real big coup for Leicester City.”

Writer’s View

There’s little doubt that Brownhill would be an excellent addition to the Leicester ranks. It’s unsurprising that they would target a two-time Championship promotion winner to strengthen their own bid of a top two finish, but you have to feel that they will be lagging behind other clubs. The midfielder proved last season that he is more than capable of playing at a higher level. Aside from Leeds, West Ham United, Everton and Celtic have also been linked and a move to the Premier League seems more likely at this stage.
