Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head-To-Head:
These two sides face off on the back of dismal seasons last time out. Cardiff City suffered relegation from the Championship and head into their first season in the third tier for over 20 years. The Bluebirds are now managed by former Rochdale player and Manchester United under age coach Brian Barry-Murphy.
It has been a difficult summer on the transfer front, with Barry-Murphy unable to make any additions to his squad thus far. Callum O’Dowda, Anwar El Ghazi and Joe Ralls are just some of the players to have departed the Cardiff City Stadium this summer, leaving the new manager with limited options to choose from.
Last season, Cardiff managed just nine wins from their 46 Championship matches, scoring just 48 goals and conceding 73. Top scorer Callum Robinson managed 12 goals while Rubin Colwill registered four assists. The Bluebirds scored just over one goal per match and conceded 1.6 on average, keeping just eight clean sheets.
Peterborough United would have hoped for a more productive season but could only manage an 18th place finish and found themselves looking nervously over their shoulder at the chasing pack.
Darren Ferguson continued the club’s philosophy of buying players from the lower divisions and his young side managed to win 13 games on their way to 51 points. The Posh scored 68 goals at an average of 1.5 per match and conceded 81 times at an average of 1.8.
Last season’s top scorer Kwame Poku scored 12 goals but now plays for Queens Park Rangers in the Championship, removing 20 goal involvements from Ferguson’s side. Malik Mothersille was the club’s top assist provider but he is another who has since left Peterborough, joining Stockport County this summer.
The last time these sides faced off was during the 2021-22 Championship season, with Cardiff City taking four points from the six available. When the sides met at the Weston Homes Stadium early in the season, the Bluebirds rescued a point late on after the hosts had established two goal lead with quick fire goals from Harrison Burrows and Siriki Dembele just after half time.
Those strikes looked to have been enough for The Posh to claim all three points before Aden Flint pulled one back with seven minutes remaining. Flint struck again in the 96th minute from a Marlon Pack cross to break Peterborough hearts.
The second meeting between them in February was a far more straight forward with Cardiff running out 4-0 victors over a Posh side who would eventually succumb to relegation. Joe Ralls and that man Flint put the Bluebirds two up at half time before Jordan Hugill and Uche Ikpeazu completed the scoring.
Before that, Cardiff and Peterborough hadn’t met for over eight and a half years, When it was The Posh who came out on top with two wins during the 2012-13 campaign. In December 2012, goals from Michael Bostwick and Dwight Gayle gave United a two goal cushion before Rudy Gestede netted a consolation with just minutes left on the clock.
In the return fixture at London Road, Aron Gunnarsson put the visitors ahead before two Grant McCann penalties turned the game on its head to claim all three points against the eventual league winners.
Over the last seven matches between the two, it is Peterborough United who hold the upper hand with four wins to Cardiff’s two. All of the matches have produced at least three goals, with the most strikes coming in a 4-3 Peterborough win in October 2011.
