Hartlepool United Boss MAkes Summer Transfer Statement

Hartlepool United manager Simon Grayson says he’s “delighted” with the club’s summer recruitment and believes inheriting a small squad has worked in his favour.

Grayson replaced former head coach Anthony Limbrick in June and has since overseen a major rebuild at the National League outfit.

Blank Slate Helps Grayson Take Control of Pools Rebuild

With just a handful of contracted players in place when he arrived, the experienced boss described the situation as “music to the ears of a coach”, allowing him to assemble a side tailored to his own style. Working closely with head of football Joe Monks, Grayson has brought in ten new players and reshaped the dressing room around character, versatility, and proven pedigree at this level.

“I was delighted when I had a blank canvas to bring in what I needed to,” he told BBC Look North. “You can go and get your own players in, the types you want that suit how you’re going to play, people with the right personalities and characters.”

New Arrivals Give Fans Hope of a Promotion Challenge

Among the key signings are former Wealdstone striker Alex Reid, who bagged 17 goals last season, and Danny Johnson, a proven Football League scorer who has found the net three times in pre-season. Other notable additions include Jermaine Francis, Jay Benn, and Reiss McNally, all of whom fit Grayson’s criteria of being adaptable and experienced.

Despite a turbulent off-season that saw Pools lose Mani Dieseruvwe and Joe Grey to National League rivals Rochdale and York City respectively, recruitment appears focused and proactive. While a goalkeeper is still on the wishlist, Grayson insists he’s satisfied with the business done so far.

Behind the scenes, it’s been a demanding process, with the manager admitting, “There have been lots of phone calls between myself, Joe Monks, players and agents, but that comes with the territory of managing.” Still, he praised the “really good players, and good people” brought in, suggesting this group will help restore optimism at Victoria Park.

Grayson’s arrival followed reports that a move for Boston United boss Graham Coughlan had fallen through. Yet for many Pools fans, his appointment and the subsequent rebuild represent a line in the sand after a chaotic finish to the previous campaign.

Writer’s View

Grayson has quietly gone about his business in exactly the way Pools needed. After seasons of underperformance and instability, what Hartlepool require more than anything is structure, clarity, and discipline. Grayson offers all three. The “blank canvas” was, ironically, the club’s biggest blessing this summer—it allowed him to wipe away the baggage of years past and build from the ground up.

This summer feels like a proper reset. Whether it brings success will depend on more than just signings, but with Grayson at the helm, Hartlepool finally have a steady hand on the tiller.
