Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale appears to be edging closer to an exit after it was revealed that the Saints are in talks with Newcastle United over a potential transfer.
The 27-year-old only moved to St Mary’s last summer after he joined the club in an initial £18 million deal from Arsenal. Having signed a four-year deal, the move was said to include a further £7 million in add-ons, although last season’s relegation means those clauses are unlikely to have been met.
Ramsdale’s future has been a regular feature in the transfer gossip columns for a number of months now. Having made 30 Premier League appearances in his debut campaign, it is well documented that the shot stopper has no intention of dropping to the Championship as he tries to win a place in the England squad for next summer’s World Cup.
Newcastle Emerge As Front Runners
Newcastle’s search for a new number one has been ongoing for some time now. They had seemingly won the race for the best goalkeeper in the Championship last season in James Trafford but appear to have missed out to Manchester City. The Cityzens swooped at the last minute to exercise their buy back clause.
As such, the Magpies have now switched their attention to Ramsdale, with current first choice Nick Pope appearing to be edging closer to a move to Leeds United. Sky Sports state that a loan with an option to buy is being discussed, although David Ornstein has expanded on Southampton’s stance.
The renowned journalist claims that the Hampshire-based side will only consider a temporary deal if they receive a significant loan and purchase fee, or he could stay put.

Ramsdale’s exit could open up an opportunity for Gavin Bazunu, who is looking to get his career back on track. He was a regular between the sticks during Southampton’s promotion from the Championship in 2023/24, although he suffered an Achilles injury which ruled him out the end of that season and almost the entirety of the last one. He did spend a brief time on loan at Standard Liege earlier this year, but once again was hit by further injury concerns.
Writer’s View
Southampton’s stance indicates they are in no hurry to sanction Ramsdale’s exit unless it is on their terms. Although he boasts high wages, the Saints will be keen to recoup as much of their initial outlay on the player. A significant loan fee would help for now, but they could even make a profit if they negotiate a handsome option to buy clause. They will also be further comforted by the return to fitness of previous first choice Gavin Bazunu.
